And he could also be the next Johnny Manziel.

Never failed a drug test in 2 years of testing. Grier did his homework so I'm not gonna worry about it.

you think high ranked players will play in europe for a year and grab some quick cash like matthews or is it a one off thing?

making chips and pop money in jr vs real money

not saying that there will be many players going but i wonder if some are thinking about it.

- RealityChecker

I think some will go, but not that many. You have to be a pretty high talent to go over and succeed like Mathews did. If you go over and are simply average or below average it will negatively affect your draft ranking IMO.

I dont think it will have a negative effect. If someone produces decently in the CHL before leaving for an average year in Europe prior to their draft, I think it wont hurt their status. I look at Laine and PJ this year, the regular season stats they put up in a good but not top league were average and it hasnt hurt their stock

They both finished in the top 10% of the league for PPG didn't they?

I mean average.

Regardless, maybe i'm wrong but I don't think it would help a prospect at all to go overseas where there is less exposure to begin with and be average.

makes sense. put the onus on the player to say whether he wants to be drafted or not.
- RealityChecker

They can ask to be granted an exemption as an exceptional player to enter the bantam draft early for junior, so why not the same thing for the NHL?

Perhaps they could set the draft-eligible age at 19 with exceptional status eligibility granted to 18 year olds who can be selected in the first round only. That would make it less about restriction based on an arbitrary number and more about ability. Teams would be reluctant to pick 18 year olds unless they're guys like McDavid, leaving the vast majority of players undrafted until they're that one extra year older.

Would also make things more intriguing when you have what's thought to be a generational talent come along like Crosby or McDavid. Do you pick them first round a year early or go with the older players who may be more dominant with that extra year under their belt and a bit more predictable in their trajectory?

Alternatively, hockey's a dangerous occupation and the league and teams should be within their legal rights to set certain qualifications to ensure that players aren't in over their heads prematurely. Tough to argue when it's a genuine precaution to avoid injury and worker's compensation and insurance issues. Three years of junior to be eligible to play in the NHL might be a reasonable restriction and another way to get them to qualify for the draft at age 19 instead of 18.

so many things that should have been looked at and/or negotiated into the last cba. i could see how many players (even a majority perhaps) would be in favour of increasing the age. after all, those that vote on the cba are already in the league.

the ncaa "loophole" also should have been closed.

As long as you work hard and you're good in the room you should be ok. Just keep being first one to post and last one to sign off and you'll have the respect of the younger guys.

From what I've seen of the draft lottery clips from last year, it doesn't look like we actually see the number combinations being drawn and matched to the corresponding teams. Some guy from an accounting firm just walks in and dumps cards with the order of the team picks into Bill Daley's lap and he reads them off. Is that really all we should expect to see?

If so it's hardly a reassuring level of transparency from an organization not noted for being credible and trustworthy.

Edit: Nevermind. Just found a clip of the actual drawing for last year. Video-cameras were rolling to create a visual record. Loved the part where Gary holds up the newspaper as proof of the date the draw was done. Like a kidnapper showing that his hostage is still alive.

I like this, though I am a little surpised they appear to be out on Cannata and rolling with two rookie goalies in Utica next season (or maybe Gartieg goes to Kalamazoo since Bachman has another year?)
- WhiteLie

I doubt Garteig would be to one to go down, based purely off of age and development. he is 24 and has less time before he is in his "prime". Demko is only 20 so if it comes down to it, i think it will be either Demko/Garteig or Garteig/Bach with Demko and Joe( if they resign him) in Kalamazoo

I agree, both Demko and Garteig played extremely well in the NCAA where some guys have come out and continued to perform really well in the AHL and even seen some NHL time in their first year out. I cant see either being in the ECHL, so I am starting to buy into the theory that Benning is looking at a deal that includes either Miller or Bachman

i'm staunchly a BPA person especially in the first round but golfingsince brought up a good point yesterday. if the team was to get 4, 5 or 6, is the talent/projection diffewrence big enough bpa vs positional need? at what pick should they trade down or is that not a consideration?

the conversation will be getting a lot better soon! or maybe we can still discuss bonino (i'm joking bloats)

- RealityChecker

I'm in the corner of trading down if we get 4-6th pick.
It depends on the package & what JB projects the talent as.
Button has Logan Brown ranked as 4th btw.

he went 32-4-7 in his senior year in the regular season before losing to UND in the frozen four.

Well this puts Cannata n Bachman's position up in the air.
