Seven forwards and three D protection Carol? Do we have a first and 2nd line and a top D pairing?? Lol no one cares what happens to Miller seems we'll be fine if there is an expansion draft

An expansion team does. Because the players Benning has been working hard to collect are exactly what they'll want as well. They don't need guys who can win in year one. They'll want young guys who will be ready to compete in a couple of years.

The Canucks will have to protect the Sedins due to their NMC clauses. That leaves them only 5 reserves for forwards who have played 2 years of pro.

So if we're assuming the Canucks want to save all their good young guys, at the moment that list looks like:
Horvat
Baertschi
Virtanen
McCann
Gaunce

If that's your list, better be prepared to say goodbye (without any form of compensation) to one of Sutter, Hansen, Etem, Granlund, Rodin, Grenier, Cassels, or any free agent they happen to sign this off season.

It won't be an earth shattering loss, but when you're already struggling to ice a competitive team, dropping one decent player is going to hurt.

I wouldnt protect those two, I dont mind signing Erikson due to the fact if hes not good he can leave in that expansion.
Personally though i think this expansion is a joke, when theres teams that arent making money, like Arizona/Florida/ect just move the location of the team

I think a lot of those players are protected because they haven't played enough games

I wouldn't protect Gaunce, I would replace him with Sutter, Hansen, Etem, Granlund for sure. But the part that is unclear for me is how many players are to be drafted. If the expansion team (or teams) gets to poach to the maximum 50 contracts, then a lot of good players will be taken (and probably very few Canucks). If its less, and the new team(s) have to reach the cap floor, than these young guys on small value contracts I think will be safer than expected.

Also unclear to me is if there is a maximum players that can be taken from each team, I think the last time around they limited to 1 or 2 per team, so again if all other teams are restricted to the same parameters, a team like Chicago has to protect 7 NMC's will leave quite a few good young players exposed

It will be a fun time for roster shakeups and seeing who GM's value the most

I heard a few weeks back Daly said for every new team it would cost existing teams 1 player. So two expansion teams 2 players. Also all ELC would be protected .

The proposed expansion draft rules that came out of the last GM meetings only recommended exemptions for players who had played less than 2 years at the pro level (NHL or AHL). No restriction on type of contract, number of games or anything else.

If there's only one expansion team, then existing teams couldn't lose more than 1 player. If it's two expansion teams then they could lose two.

I'm assuming the Vegas team will be announced this year with the expansion draft to be held after next season or prior to the start of the 2017-2018 season. That would mean McCann and Virtanen would both have two years of pro.

Demko and whoever they draft this year would be exempt because they'll only have played one season of pro. Boeser wouldn't need to be protected because he won't have played a year of pro.

Makes sense, so the new team gets 30 players under contract? or do they just fill an NHL lineup of 18-20 players and some teams will be lucky no one gets poached? (Assuming only one expansion team here)

Another reason to trade Edler and Hansen. Also another reason to not sign UFAs and to tank another year. Then following next season we have burrows, miller and higgins coming off the books plus another high pick. Then start looking to add your missing parts.

Some funny comments on HF Boards.

One guy said watch Benning trade Markstrom and sign Miller for three more years

When Gartieg asked why he signed withVancouver, he replied " I don't want to go up against Brock Boeser again"
