Difference between 3rd and 5th is pretty significant. With the top 3 you know you're getting a game changer. Now they're more likely to end up with a player similar to Horvat. A quality player, really nice to have, but not necessarily dominant or a consistent threat that opposing coaches have to design special game plans to deal with. - YeOldTimer
Exactly what I'm thinking. Also if the draft lottery was like last year, Canucks would have stayed at 3. That's why this stings a little more. They picked 6 two years ago. Virtanen is a nice player, but I'm not yet convinced he takes the team to another level. |

Number one pick was compared to Jack Eichel . Nice pick 20 goal scorer, not a game changer. Buffalo improved but years away from being a contender.
Benning is doing a decent job at building a team . |

You would just be stepping into TB'S shoes and unable to keep your good young talent in a few years because you have 15% of your cap tied up in one player. Not that he would sign with the Canucks, but if they were like, you know, the only team offering him the numbers he's looking for. |

He's playing with GM's who will eat him alive if he deals at this level. |

You do, but a #1C prospect like Matthews will play in the NHL next year and start growing, for the right timing the depth of the team needs to be ready for that player to join. I see Edmonton with that problem, their 1OA's are moving onto their big contracts but without the quality depth behind them haven't been able to make a playoff push. Plus you never know who can surprise |

There is no 1C successor in the system. |

But the difference between us and tampa, were going down in cap space year after year, with all the space this year, Burrows (if not bought out) and Miller next, the Sedins after that. And i cant see any of our current prospects actually getting paid more then 5 mill a season for awhile. |

Eichel was a rookie, he will do even better next year. I agree that Benning has been building positively -- at least his drafts. |

I worked hard at being deliberately negative all day. Doing what I could to help the cause and all. But things didn't work out (surprise, surprise) and, after indulging in a little pointless nonsense here for a change of pace, I think it's time to go be bitter for a while. May all your evenings be more successful than the Canucks' day. |

Did the lottery machine take into account Corsi or Bo's plus/minus? |

He's a number one center as a rookie scoring 50+ points with McGinn and Girgensons as his two best regular wingers. That's amazing.
If you don't think that's a game changer for a franchise... well... I don't even really know man. |

No way Nylander goes top 5.
Was here yesterday saying Nucks would get 5th or 6th. No idea why you guys would think you'd get a top 3. Nucks are the Cubs of the NHL. Just not gonna happen for you guys. You've got a few decent 2nd and 3rd liner prospects in Horvat and Virtanen but it's going to be a long, long time before you compete again. 5th pick this year will be another decent but not high end prospect. A long road ahead. |

Well, as a Leafs fan I'm sure you can appreciate the Nucks situation. Leafs and Nucks seem destined for perennial failure. Though the Leafs now with Matthews ad Marner seem positioned to finally be getting it together. Nucks are the most unlucky team in NHL history. Every league has one. |

They do remind me a lot of what the Leafs have been through this past decade yes. But, as you say Leafs future is starting to look up a bit. A long way to go but Matthews, Marner, Nylander and Rielly is a decent start. Supporting pieces like Brown, Johnson, Hyman, Soshnikov look like they can help out. Maybe (doubtful) they can add Stamkos, Zaitsev and/or Vesey to the mix as well. The 2015 draft has quite a number of PPG or close to guys, so that's intriguing. Nielson, Bracco, Dermott, Timashov may become something and a slew of picks the next two years. Long road ahead though |

Ya, I really like Marner. Very similar to Kane.
But it was funny seeing the history of guys drafted 1st overall and how so many of them have never won a Cup.
Really curious to see who goes 4th, 5th and 6th in this draft. Would think:
4: Tkachuck
5: Dubois
6: Nylander OR Juoleleivooilevi or whatever the (frank)
Seems 4 and 5 is Dubois vs Tkachuk |
