According to one scout for a Canadian team, Matthews, who made the unusual choice to play overseas in his draft-eligible season, would have been second only to Connor McDavid in 2015.
“People don’t know how good he is because he wasn’t around to scrutinize all year,” said the scout. “I think that’s a huge advantage for him. The team that gets him is going to be incredibly surprised just how good he is. I hear things like he would have gone third in last year’s draft. Are you kidding?
“No disrespect to (2015 No. 2 pick Jack) Eichel, but he couldn’t carry Matthews’ skates to the rink. His impact in the NHL is going to be special.” |

Stamkos and Tavares both making 10-11 million per? thats pretty unlikely - GardinerExpress
I agree it's very unlikely and I have no problem with it. I just want to keep JT and add around him. Stamkos is not a huge need for the Islanders. |

On another note.....that's one hell of a series between the Pens and Caps.
Winning the draft lottery and being able to draft Matthews, should change the dynamic and direction of the rebuild. I was all for getting rid of Kadri and JVR for draft picks or young players, but now I'm not so sure. I think that Leafs have an excellent number of almost ready talent to foist on the league. Maybe the Leafs do need some relatively young veterans to help this team to get into a playoff race, next year. I can see the Leafs being where Buffalo is, this year, around 8th from the bottom, next spring. Maybe even higher. I don't really want to see Stamkos here, because of salary cap issues, down the road. If it was a 5 year, or less contract, maybe. In 5 years, this corp of young star quality players will need to be compensated, once their entry level/bridge contracts expire. Having 7 year of $10 million per, for Stamkos is asking for another Kessel like issue. If Matthews turns into a young gun and becomes a number one centre, in two year, then what do we do with Stamkos? Yes, he is talented, but we need to secure a top end defenseman and a better goaltender. That should get done, once Lou gets shopping around. Leafs will be much better next year.....three years from now, it'll be time to make the playoffs. |

Cannot wait until Okposo is gone. I think they will try to move Halak as well. I want Bailey gone as well. Have to think the Islanders will at least try with Stamkos. Winning a round should help in signings FA's. Still a very long shot for Stamkos though. - ses111
How are you going to work that out with Tavares and all the money locked up in the defensive end? |

This is the opportunity to cement the 1st line centre position for the next 12 years. Amazing that the number 13 was the last ball to drop and #13 was the last great centre that the Leafs had. Karma? Maybe!

honestly with matthews coming here i feel the odds of signing stamkos is a lot higher. this is a team that could be borderline playoff ready as early as next year if stamkos comes. - daeth

I would love to hear what all those people who are so upset the Leafs tanked, think they should have done...
Clarkson was a laughing stock contract... should they have kept him?
Phaneuf was routinely voted the most overrated player in the league and there were daily comments about how his was the worst contract in the league... so the Leafs should have kept him?
Kessel was routinely called a 1-dimensional, lazy player who had no leadership qualities... so should the Leafs have kept him?
SHould they not have traded away their assets at the last 2 deadlines, when they had ZERO realistic chance of making the playoffs?
Should they have played Bernier more, who gave the team absurdly bad goaltending the first couple months of the season?
Do they think Lupul, who is injured every year, was faking it?
We get trolled hard for years about this poop, and then when we get a management group that does something about it, finally, everyone is all butt hurt about us tanking... |
