Plus, NBC was already laying down the groundwork for the NHL with the ".6 seconds after the play versus 1.0+ seconds in Orpik's hit." NBC was already setting expectations.
Late elbow, principle point on contact head and leaves feet. YEP totally garbage play by Letang. - dragonoffrost
Wait, what?
It was a shoulder and he did make contact with the head, but it was through the body as well.. He did sort of launch, and his feet do come off the ice when he makes contact.
I think they got it right. 1 games is a good call.

Letang (star player in NBC eyes) vs Orpik (not so much in NBC eyes) so they bias the coverage.
Could you imagine the amount of Pens fans who would want someone killed if that Letang hit was thrown by say Carlson, and the recipient was , say, Crosby?
It was an ugly, targeted hit. He doesnt drive through the chest as some Pens fans love to swear by. He instead lifts his shoulder, makes principle contact with Johanssons face, and drives his shoulder through the hit. Had he not elevated his body (he does leave his feet because of that propulsion) the hit would have been right through the shoulder/crest of Johansson... instead he took a shot at a guy just on the fringe of being late.
So:
1- While not technically late by timing, the player was no longer in possession of the puck.
2- Letang adjusts his body, driving his checking shoulder in upward direction.
3- Checking shoulder makes initial and primary contact with the head/face of Johansson.
4- The "picking of the head" was visualized by three things: Change of body position, propulsion in an upward motion, and primary contact point being head
5- No apparent injury
6- Not a repeat offender (last suspension being in 2011 (?))
He should get 3-4 games, likely will get 1-2.

Elbow extends during the hit (seen pretty good at the 31 and 39 second views in your video) is what I was referring to and he definitely launches into the hit like most of the hits that Schenn ended up getting tagged for.
But Tanger should have got 3 since this is the classic Scott Stevens Blowup hit that the league supposedly wants gone.
What is everyones take on the Letang hit. Was it comparable to Orpick? I saw Letang got 1 game. - J35Bacher
I haven't seen the DOPS video. But when I watched the hit I thought the principle point of contact was the upper chest area even though there was also substantial head contact.
TBH the Letang hit looks like a hockey play to me. My capture is a bit off but right before it he makes contact with the chest\shoulder area first. His skates are the ice. It wasn't a charge.
At worst to me it was borderline late so 2 min minor and 1 game suspension makes sense I guess but slow anything down enough and it can look bad.

Agreed. Orpik went out of his way and "picked" the head. Letang was definitely late and high, but you can at least make a case that he wasn't targeting the head. Orpik, there is no argument at all.

One of the things I heard about Schenn was the he was "launching himself into the hits", which if you don't leave the ice, I'm not sure what that means.
The launching dynamics for Letang was almost the same as Schenn's hit on The Greatest American Hero from Round 1.
Ghost should absolutely win the Calder. In fact he should run away with the voting. He's a defenseman. His impact is arguably why we made the playoffs. The kid in Chicago is a very good player but he's on a team with world class talent that is able to contend every year, including Patrick Kane that just won the scoring title. McDavid was awesome but he got hurt and he was unable to keep his team out of the basement of the standings for like a 6th consecutive season (who knows how long now).

Remember the NHL cover was Toews and Kane and then Kane became an alleged rapist and got taken off the cover like 3 weeks before release? That was something. - Mononoke

Kane should be on the NHL17 cover posing with the biggest hard on he can mustard after winning the scoring title. 99 problems and all.
