Not gona happen. TB offerd 8.5 per Stamkos said no thanks.
Why would he sign in Toronto for less when he could have stayed in income tax free Tampa for more. - ImThatGuy
Several reasons;
1) Endorsements in TO would be Huge - much more significant than any couple of million in salary would bring. Wheras playing weak market teams like Tampa and Buffalo could not possibly match this. Leafs have huge fan base and get more attendance for a practice than teams like Tampa or Buffalo would for a playoff game.
2) His home town and a chance to be a hero that finally leads the top earning franchise to a cup.
3) Playing Centre instead of wing
4) Playing for Babcock
All of the above - especially endorsements.
Smart NHL players would realize that endorsements offer way more potential than any salary - look at Jordan or Norman. |

Uhmmmm......the leafs have 25 million in cap space right now and have literally no ufa or rfa's to sign other than entery levels or depth contracts that are 2 way. Michelik, greening, and liachs cap hits will be gone next year. They are the most financially set team to sign him.
Nice try though but run along now - Santo_44
And let's not forget about the LTIR space Horton and potentially Lupul hanging out with Stephan on Robidas island. |

...Soooooo modeling glue? Or did you go big time and go for airplane glue?
There is a 0% change Stamkos (or any self repeating elite 26 yr old FA) takes that deal...
Also Kadri stays, we have oddles of cap space even with Stammer making 10.5 ( which he will get), I'm glad you're not the GM anddddd have a great day - LifeLongLeafer
Read it before you comment - LIFELONG LEAFER and shoe size IQ. I said I would sign him for a price - If he gets more - let him sign elsewhere |

Not one person has brought up the cap implications of the leafs signing stamkos! They Leafs already have roughly $63 million committed to 19 players next season. Obviously money can always be moved around but lets say Stamkos commands a max contract of $10-11million what kind of wiggle room does that leave the Leafs to make other transactions or signings? Absolutely none! Im not saying that it wouldnt be a great addition to the line up but why would you want to tie yourself down to a series of contracts just after you got out of this situation over the last decade or so? Teams need to have flexability now more than ever. If the Leafs were truelly close to being a true cup contender next year i could see doing this but they are not and will not be in one year. They will be better but they will not even make the playoffs next year. The management needs to be slightly patient here and wait unless they can talk Stamkos down to a more reasonable contract at around $8 million
- speeda[/img]
You are not reading the Cap sites correctly....as example, Horton's $5mill plus comes off that plus the burried contracts.
Not to mention contracts that will probably be moved. Leafs have tons of cap space to sign Stamkos and than some. |

Stop!!!
Stamkos is not playing anywhere for less than 9mill and will probably get $10mill plus.

Not too familiar with the Leafs blue line.. what's their D pipeline look like? They aren't going to fall into the Edmonton problems of having stacked forwards with no backend are they? Buuuuut... Stammer, Mathews, Kadri is a ridiculous 3 Center model to build upon. - j.boyd919

Yeah, I think he just went to random cap site and saw $63mill and said "no space".....
Cap sites are not overly intuitive.

Re: Defense. Quotes not working.
Harrington, Percy, Marincin, Corrado, all are virtual locks to be at least NHL regulars.
Jake Gardiner would be a star player if he hadn't spent the last three years on a crap team and Reilly has potential to be Kris Letang.
But the Oilers D isn't bad either. Klefbom has already put up respectable top line minutes, Sekara is an above average top four player, Nurse projects as a top pairing star and Davidson and Reinhardt are both good NHL regulars, at worst.
The D gets a bad rap, but mostly it's because Nurse wasn't an Insta-star and Klefbom missed most of the year. Those guys would be exciting building blocks on basically any other team that wasn't stacked knee deep in first overalls.
If they do as expected and add in a top line Dman this summer, their defense will be well above average. - James_Tanner
What the hell has either Harrington or Marancin done to warrant any optimism whatsoever? |
|
|
|
hoping they move some picks/prospects with Pittsburgh's first to obtain a D man in the top 12. #onecanhope - Lucas.Neilson

Stamkos is coming off a season ending injury with expectations of full recovery - but nothing is guaranteed. He has scored 57, 40 , 72 and 64 points in the last four years. Paying 10 million plus for a player with those stats is not a good move. Besides all this the Leafs already have several salaries they will carry Lupul, Robidas, Kessel, Laich and Bernier
If someone else wants to pay $10 million for 72 points and that is his best in the past four years - have at it. |

AAHH...so you base salary strictly on points, eh?!
I guess Toews is someone you would want to stay away from as well!!
What about this - those 233pts were over 244games. Does that count for anything? Also, how about the fact that he is 2nd overall in NHL scoring in that time frame on a goal per game basis - and he is just 26 yrs old.
How about all the other intangibles that Stamkos brings or are you unaware and just look at a pts total line to draw your opinions?
Dude, you are so wrong about this - you really need more perspective on evaluating hockey players. |

I 100% think that Stamkos signs with Toronto and I even think he would take a slight discount. $9-9.5M for 7 years.
Stamkos is at the stage in his career where he could either go down as a really good player with another team or an all time great with the Leafs. He would walk in and get the C immediately. Playing for the best coach with an incredible amount of talent surrounding him. If they can get a goalie and one more top 2-4 D they make the playoffs next season. In 2 years I think they can be a contender.
If you can go with Stamkos, Matthews & Bozak as your top 3 C's and trade Kadri for a D man you have a great team with the Leafs next year. Marner & Nylander are for sure ready for the NHL. |

I really really like Stamkos as a player he is one of the best pure goal scorers in the NHL, He is really fit and he seems both intelligent and a good team guy. - the Leafs are trying to build a team based on winning every year. That does not mean a cup every year - Detroit made the playoffs 24 years straight and only have a couple of cups to show for it - But they are there every year - did they have any 10 million a year players? Chicago has two and every year because of it - they have to decide who to throw overboard. Max deals rarely work out in sports.

Attendance figures on their own mean absolutely nothing.
You have to examine attendance figures X average price of ticket.
Disclaimer: I think Tampa is a healthy franchise.
But c'mon, fellas, it's not close to Toronto in terms of revenues generated from ticket sales.
Quick math - according to this chart, Leafs' average ticket price is almost 3 times the price of a Tampa ticket.
