It is a factor in what people are willing to pay to live in a given area. When I quickly looked up the fastest growing cities in the world - they were in places like China, India, Pakistan and Africa - none of them have much appeal for me. I personally like Florida - not everyone does - Summers - in the south are way hot and humid and fall you have to contend with Hurricane season. Springs and Winters are great though. Population stats don't necessarily have a great deal to with quality of life in given cities. The Mercer ranking rates Vancouver at 5th best city to live in the world and Toronto as 15th, the highest rated city in the US is San Francisco at 28. It is a very thorough and interesting website.

None of that matters, you said why would Stamkos, a professional hockey player, want to live in Florida. Real estate prices are more about the salaries the people of that location demand, as salaries increase so does housing costs. Stamkos, as well as other professional hockey players, would get the no state taxes for half of their games, they would get to golf during the off days (Stamkos lives on a very nice course) and they don't get bothered by anyone. I moved to Florida to get away from the snow and because the cost of living was great, more bang for my buck and all the facts show a lot of people are moving to Florida so people must want to be there. |

You conveniently forget to mention aligator attacks.
And having to deal with so many low-tipping French Canadians who winter there.
No thank you. |

And the risk of Trump as president should seal the deal.
Stamkos to Toronto - e5! |

Neither is on next year's team. Lamoriello has already said - at least 50% of the team will be different in 2016-17. There better stuff on the Marlies. - winsix
That's ridiculous, but when you just have random opinions and don't use stats for analysis, you're bound to make ridiculous assessments. |

Nah, they don't limit shots like Marincin.
Limit shots=Good. End of story. No point discussing any further.
Josh Manson=Elite
I like advanced stats but holy hell some people just go overboard - sbroads24
Josh Manson is elite at one skill. Since he's a defenseman though, that's a pretty good thing to be elite at. How is shots against an "advanced stat" anyways? It seems sort of like it should be the most basic of stats to use for a defenseman.

It's a Leafs fan defence mechanism - latch on to one aspect of a Leafs player's game he does well, and fall in love with him.
Jay McClement was good at faceoffs, so he was awesome.
Leo Komarov speaks five languages - he must be fantastic! - Atomic Wedgie
Faceoffs barely matter and Komarov actually is awesome due to his excellent defense. |

He's played 100 career games, in the role of a 5/6 defender. He isn't elite at anything. Stop throwing around that word.
How much more obvious could this get? Kris Letang posted a 24% CF last night. Derrick Pouliout posted 50% CF.
I'm assuming Pouliout was the better player because he did a better job in the shot differential right? |

It's just bizarre.
He's probably right that players like Manson, Pysyk, Marincin etc are decent to good players, maybe even underutilized in some instances. However, they are not, and are not close to elite, in any capacity.
For every Stralman, who's numbers continued to be excellent as his role increased on a different team, there are 10 Cody Fransons who can't handle big minutes or an increased role, no matter his hero chart suggests |

Absolutely they should.... he'd be the perfect insulator for Matthews. Slot Matthews in as #2, and Laich as #3.
Stamkos is only 26, so it's not like he wouldn't be part of the 'youth movement'.
They could then use Kahdri and Bosak, along with Pittsburg pick in the first round to obtain a defenseman.
Stamkos
Matthews
Laich
Pretty solid down the middle. |

If Stamkos wants to play in Toronto not signing him would be a huge mistake. You are talking about one of the best shots in the game, attached to a player who wants to win. He is EXACTLY the type of character player you want wearing the C for your franchise, especially a franchise with so many young players.
There isnt likely to be another opportunity like this for a long time. |

Everyone forgets that Stamkos decides where he stays...
Why would he choose a market where the media is always phsycho when he could choose a team that might win a cup in his lifetime? Leafs suck.
Could his old fan feelings matter? Maybe what all his friends would love to see? How dare Stamkos actually exhibit real feelings and a desire to join a particular team even though we all rag on every player for showing too much emotion all the time!!! I want emotion! And I want players to play like they are possessed.
Like they are playing for the team they grew up cheering for!
Wow, so he just has to show some really, really,, skilled players how to become real serious stars, unlike the leafs...
ummmm.
Welcome to the new leafs.
We have actual possible prospects.
We have actual good players that want to sign with our team. It's hard to accept even for me...
Players sign deals that are not a detriment to this team. It's like they actually want to be a part of this team??!! Like this team has a real future.

Hockey doesn't bring in anywhere close to what the other big sports do. I believe Crosby makes the larges endorsements per year at about 4.5mill. Stamkos being in Toronto won't do much more than the marque player in the NHL. I think Stamkos does about 1.5mill right now in TB.
NHL just doesn't have the same draw as the other sports and to get those big bucks, the endorsers have to peel to the mass market in the US (and around the world).
I think Stamkos wants to sign here but it won't be at any discounts. Not only that, he knows Toronto fully can pay him. It's not like Toronto has any cap restraints where the only way to sign him is to give a discount. It's not going to happen. - Cooshie
Stamkos would get 900 billion $ in jersey sales alone in T.O., on the first day, before he even gets out of bed. |

To be fair, Tanner didn't say he was elite. He said he was a good bottom pairing d-man. I am not sure how good he is, but I'm not convinced there is better on the Marlies ready to come up and play next season. |

Not one person has brought up the cap implications of the leafs signing stamkos! They Leafs already have roughly $63 million committed to 19 players next season. Obviously money can always be moved around but lets say Stamkos commands a max contract of $10-11million what kind of wiggle room does that leave the Leafs to make other transactions or signings? Absolutely none! Im not saying that it wouldnt be a great addition to the line up but why would you want to tie yourself down to a series of contracts just after you got out of this situation over the last decade or so? Teams need to have flexability now more than ever. If the Leafs were truelly close to being a true cup contender next year i could see doing this but they are not and will not be in one year. They will be better but they will not even make the playoffs next year. The management needs to be slightly patient here and wait unless they can talk Stamkos down to a more reasonable contract at around $8 million
- speeda[/img]
they can buy out Laich, Greening and Cowen fairly cheap (if necessary) and Horton will go to LTIR giving around 9M extra in cap. And they will probably make some additional moves. |
