Chayka actually played hockey. True - he only played Junior A (below the OHL or QMJHL) but that is a fairly high level of hockey. He should understand that he can't base his decisions on analytics alone. In order to get the puck and get shots and get goals you have to make a number of right plays and that begins with positioning and hockey sense which are the most important factors in the game. Chayka should understand all the little details that go into eventually recording positive stats - both traditional and new age analytical.

ie: He understands hockey way more than Tanner and won't make every decision based on Corsi.

Here's the thing - analytics are useful, but if a GM makes all his decisions based on Corsi and Pts per 60 minutes of even strength time on ice - that team will eventually be garbage. You can't ignore that not all shot attempts are created equal. A Kadri shot from the outside into the breadbasket is not the same as a Patrick Kane snipe from the slot. TOI/60 doesn't take into account the fact that bottom line players can have inflated stats her by playing weaker competition and being less fatigued when they do get ice time. etc. etc.

You are correct, but again, you are falling in line with the many people that assume "analytics" equals "corsi"...while I guarantee he looks at those, his analytics are far more complex. Even the data behind his analytics is different than corsi, since they do video mining to create the dataset. He needs to know hockey NOT to know when to ignore Corsi, but rather to create better, more insightful analytics than corsi.

Statistics, by definition, are based on past performance and experience.

Therefore, there is the implicit assumption that future performance will be similar, which we all know is not guaranteed.

A huge part of the GM role is identifying young talent and their top-end potential and then project their ability to develop in the system through coaching, physical development, and playing experience. Also, the GM must negotiate with players, coaches, agents, and other teams to put the best team on the ice within the restrictions of salary cap and contract limits. It's far more complicated than just getting players with good stats.

While statistics can be manipulated to suit any outcome, particularly through selective data biases, projecting future performance based on those stats is far from a scientific sure thing.

I think he's got his hands full and there is likely to be a lot of excuses around "unpredictable" events such as injuries and other teams learning and adapting to Coyotes' game tendencies.
