The problem is the UFAs know that, only desperate players will sign with a bottom 10 team, knowing that they will be traded at TDL, and desperate players won't help this team out of the basement, drafting and development will do that. Is signing Matthias and trading him for a 4th a great way to build a team? - A_SteamingLombardi
I think so. It allows you more time to develop your prospects in JR, etc. Plus adding extra picks is the best way to build depth. The leafs did it this year and have like 10 picks in the draft. More picks you have the more chance you have of getting a couple late round picks that hit. Tate Olson for example 7th rounder and looks like he might play one day. Everything after the 2nd round is lottery ticket so the more tickets you have the more chance to win. |

Of course there is no guarantee but the expectations are greater based on draft position. Also, just based on stats, it's not unreasonable to expect a quality player at 5 more than at 10.

So we can expect 250 points out of our draft pick!!
Edit: You kind of made my point for me. A team is just as likely to select a role player with the 5-7 pick as it is a top 6 forward. |

I'd rather draft with a rifle than a shotgun. |

Having a bunch of picks is OK, but in the long run you have max contracts you can award. |

And the odds get worse the lower the pick, which is why expectations are greater for higher drafted players and..... why the higher the first round pick, the higher odds (for lack of a better term) that he pans out into an impact player.

My original point stands. We get to pick a good prospect, nothing more...nothing less.
Interesting to read that for the most part the Dmen selected in the top 10 picks have added solid value. |

I hear ya.
I was surprised at the d stats as well. Lots of interesting choices for Benning et al in what to do at the draft. At least we have some potential excitement to look forward to. It might be just as exciting as the trade deadline |

We get to add a couple of more pieces to the pipeline regardless. That's never a bad thing, just trying to temper expectations. |

I think you need to be a lot happier than you are! They just have to make a good pick and they'll get an excellent player.
2015 - Noah Hanifin was 5th, great young dman.
2014 - Dal Colle was 5th, after him Virtanen Ehlers Nylander Larkin Fabbri
2013 - Elias Lindholm was 5th, Monahan Nurse Ristolainen went 6 7 8
2012 - Morgan Rielly was 5th, five good dmen directly after
2011 - Ryan Strome was 5th, Zibanegad Scheifele Couturier Hamilton after
2010 - Niederreiter was 5th, Tarasenko Schwartz Kuznetsov Coyle Nelson after
The Canucks would love to have any of those kids, they're getting a good player, not a generational talent but a good young player. Just make the pick count. |

None of those guys are going to have 250 pts before they're 25. This report covers 10 years, I can see most of those guys getting to 250 in 10 years. |
