kill me now but i actually agree with Tanner 100%. the media, particularly the pathetic Canadian media which MUST talk about hockey for 8760 hours per year, does this every single year no matter how much of a consensus there is at the #1 pick. and we fall for it and get sucked into these debates.
there is no debate. it's Matthews. all 30 teams would take Matthews. stop it already. |

"It's um...it's really great to be...to be going to...*sigh*...to Toronto."
Energetic quotes like that get you named captain in Toronto. |

Eichel was pretty damn great this year. Calder nominee or not.
He got beat out by the future best player of this generation in McDavid, a 21 year old defensemen, and a 24 year old.
He was the leading scorer from his class and put up similar numbers to other great players in there 1st years.
Matthews and Eichel are close, but I'm not sure whose better |

It wouldn't be a good idea..
just the fact that a barfalo fans thinks being drafted by TO wouldn't make a guy happy. Matthews has a chance to be a legend. They don't understand what hockey means to that city and never will. |

Reilly, 2016 1st and 2nd, 2017 1st for McDavid
Do Leaf fans do that trade? - Matthews_Auston
Well Oilers fans sure wouldn't. Theres no deal that could be made with one team that would make trading Connor worthwhile for me. |

At this point, I'll take the guy with NHL experience under his belt. |

From everything that I've heard / read / seen, Eichel is a poor man's Matthews. Only slightly poorer, but poorer nonetheless
I think Matthews is the easy choice over Eichel - AxlRose91

This is a ridiculous debate, Eichel is already proven in NHL and Mathews is not yet, so its totally fair to say Eichel is much better right now bc the other hasn't sniffed the NHL, geez.... |

Eichel didn't exactly light the world on fire last season... You could almost say he didn't quite live up to expectations.
Matthews has a higher trajectory... Will he pan out? time will tell. |

Except Eichel was a #2 overall pick and light years better than Scott so your argument is incredibly flawed |

Maybe from your Toronto based media, but from what I've heard its been more generally said that he would go #3.
But really its hogwash anyways, nobody can really say for sure |

He had 24 goals and 56 points... If Matthews gets a similar stat line are you gonna tell me he didn't live up to expectations too? Please.
If Matthews scores that many points you'd be jumping for joy |

He outscored what Tavares, Stamkos, Hall did there rookie years. Not sure anyone thought he'd be a 60-70 point player year 1 |
