It happens with most prospects that are viewed as a consensus #1 for a long time. Someone wants attention or wants to sound smart and predict another guy is better.
Eichel and McDavid last year.
I remember when RG3 was apparently going to jump Andrew Luck. - sbroads24
except in NFL, they were two completely different players. One is a run and gun passer, the other is a spread/dual threat/Michael vick read option player. Hard to weigh the success of those quarterbacks. Still would have taken luck tho |

Luck throws too many picks and RG3 is always injured. Luck is miles better than him tho |

Yeah because a 4th liner and a 3rd liner are our franchise saviours...
What point are you guys trying to prove? That more people live in Ontario? - 6ringslowe

It Will be fun seeing Eichel and Matthews face off against each other for hopefully a long time, and get a rivalry going again that matters. - LandlordTom
when did the sabres and leafs "rivalry" ever matter? maybe locally is about it. |

It matters to the sabre fans. Buffalo is more of a after thought in terms of rivalry for the leafs

Another option is trading the First overall pick to Tampa for a hull of players including Stamkos Negotiation rights. |

Buffalo is such a nice team. Do they even have any rivalries? Does anyone even hate them? (no disrespect to Milan Lucic) |

I understand why you're pissy today..
truly i do.. 4 first overall picks in 6 years you almost expect it to be handed to you again.. - Arctic_AARDVARK
Even if we got the 1st overall I would want to trade it like I do the 4th overall. We don't need more kids. We need NHL ready defensemen and that's it. |

I think a blue jackets sabres rivalry would ignite the league. Who wouldnt want to see those two juggernauts go at it. |

That might happen if we find out Mathews is addicted to prescription meds and coke. And thus, becomes Ryan Leaf. He looks high anyways in his interviews |

He'll be a good 2 way center. It's so hard to compare these kids to players from other draft years without seeing them play head to head. I think Eichel is more of a sniper than Matthews however, just cause his shot is a cannon. But it's all moot because...
McDavid>>>>>>>everybody |

True. Mathews doesn't have Gretzky's scoring ability or John Scott's size or Dion Phaneuf's truculence. The Leafs will have to settle for him |

In the end I can't imagine the Leafs won't be taking Matthews. Laine is a fantastic talent, but I only see him having full entrenched himself in that second spot. Seems like 1-3 should be pretty well locked in at this point.
Certainly a fantastic break for Toronto having that top pick. Finally being able to draft their own franchise center. One important hole in the lineup will be filled up and it's one step forward to improving.
Has been nice to see Matthews at the world championship.
In terms of the versus questions between players, not all that worried. On the Matthews and Eichel topic....they'll have a long time to settle that between themselves. Who knows which would have gone second overall if both were able to be drafted last year, but in the end it's not a big deal. Both are really talented players. |
