So the Winnipeg blog is stating that they may not take Laine. Of course, all kinds of trade proposals are being tossed out. Damn I wish there was a way we could get the 2nd and 3rd in this draft. Imagine Bennett centering the 2 Finns. Even if we traded up to 4th and one of the Finns miraculously slipped down.

could you imagine if edmonton traded for some over the hill or over priced D man with the #4 and then somehow one of the Finns drops to #4. |

I can imagine that. Wideman and #6 for the #4 pick. |

Here is a hypothetical idea for you all. If you could acquire both the #2 and the #3 picks but it costs you #6.....and Gaudreau (among a few other novelty pieces), would you do it? |

Forget about the details about NTC/NMC being an issue with the expansion draft what 7 forwards, 3 defensemen and 1 goaltender OR NHL teams can opt for option B as well which is protect any 8 skaters and 1 goalie. Which ever scenario you pick ..... who do you protect on your team?
Note: Any player starting their ELC or any Pro contract after and including the 2015-16 season in the NHL or AHL is exempt from this draft. (Which means there is a surprising amount of the Flames prospect exempt from this draft as long as it is announced this year.)
1.Monahan
2.Gaudreau
3.Bennett
4.Backlund
5.Frolik
6.Ferland
7. Open Spot for FA Forward or player acquired in future trade
1.Giordano
2.Brodie
3.Hamilton
1. Open Spot for FA Goalie or Goalie acquired in future trade - buddy_doug
The way I read it only players going into their first or second years of their entry level contracts would be exempt. That means that is the expansion draft is after next season players like Poirier, Shinkaruk, Klimchuk, Gilles, and maybe Jankowski become elegible for the expansion draft.
for me that means they protect:
1. Gaudreau
2. Monahan
3. Bennett
4. Backlund
5. Frolik
6. Assumed top 6 forward acquired this off season through free agency or trade
7. Person deemed the best to keep out of Ferland, Poirier, Shinkaruk or Klimchuk (or maybe Jankowski)
1. Giordano
2.. Brodie
3. Hamilton
1. If they go out for a true #1 goalie, or Gilles if they go for a potential filler like Reimer.
No trades are elegible so Stajan does now have to be protected. For No moves it depends when it kicks in. Wideman is the only No Move of concern but his contract will be done on July 1. I would assume that they won't be forced to protect about to expire contracts if they don't have to. |

Would there be multiple teams involved?
Gaudreau is incredible though. We haven't even seen his ceiling yet. What a lucky fanbase we are to have him.

Yea, there would have to be multiple teams. And I agree, I wouldn't want to trade him but it could get tempting if you could secure both Laine and Pulju. Coupled with Mony or Bennett, that's one full line. I was reading something else and it got me thinking, the only way would be to use one of our stud young guys to acquire multple assets to be able to add enough to deals to WPG and CLB.
What would you gauge Johnny's value at for WPG? Their 2x 1sts and...? Trouba? Hellebuyck? |

You would be crazy not to make that trade. |

Stop trying to trade Gaudreau. Stop it!!! Will never happen, he is our future franchise player, the kid is a notch under MacDavid & ask Oiler fans if they would trade MacDavid for both those Finn kids, forget about having to add & they will really quickly tell you to go pound. Grass is always greener with these young guys & Iwould not trade a just turned 23 year old phenom, NHL proven for a couple birds in the bush.
I would rather trade the #6, all of our 2nd's, Janko & Fat Ras than give up Gaudreau.
Gaudreau would make the Flames pay dearly for ever doing that. |

(frank) I love that avi!
You think it's a no brainer? What would you value Gaudreau at? From WPG? Just the 2nd or much more? |

Haha. I'm not trying to trade him. I've just been thinking about Burke's trade to get the Sedin's and what it would take to get WPG to bite (as well as getting Pulju). It would have to be a proven commodity that is already better or will at least be on par to what is expected from the pick (Laine).
That's why I posed the question; would you? Clearly I know where you stand. |

I wouldn't
Gaudreau is a sure thing a real NHL star now
draft picks are still gambles....even the "sure-things" you never know how they actually translate to NHL performance.
Unless you're talking McDavid level talent, there are still plenty of duds in those top end prospects |

Plus honestly...there is a dropoff from #3, but you take this a few years from now and you have no idea...
Maybe what you get at #6 or maybe at #10 may be better than Pulju
Sorry, in no dream world would I trade #6 AND Gaudreau for 2 "maybe" gambles...
Like I wouldn't even do Guadreau for #1 (Matthews)...the only guy I would trade him for is McDavid.... |

I don't think we have the assets to even dream of doing that. It would be sweet but you really need to already have the 2nd or 3rd pick then try to pull that off.
I wonder if the Oilers would take Wideman, our #6 & our #35 to get the #4. I would love to score Dubois. |

Haha...I don't want to be the guy that is super overprotective of his hometown players...but as others have said, Gaudreau is a sure-fire NHL superstar and he's only 22. There's just no reason to do it. |
