You can't blame the injury on Lehner being lazy or Murray not having a crystal ball and seeing it coming.
So, this is a "we'll just have to wait and see" situation.
If he played the full season up to his potential, no one would care about the 21st overall pick. I do think Legwand was a favor because we had cap space to burn. A 21st overall alone should have done it. - seedy
You can absolutely blame it on Murray. He was injured the year before and if anyone should know about his character, it's the guy that was in the same organization with him for a few years prior.
There was no way in hell anyone else was offering a 1st for that bum. Murray just doesn't care what he has to give up. It will bite him soon.
....that being said, Lehner could be pretty good |

Here is the issue with your statement: In 6 seasons, Lehner has never played more than 36 games per season. So what is his actual potential for a full season? Nobody knows. So what exactly did Murray give up a 1st round pick for? because it certainly wasnt for an established player with a good track record. |

Fwiw, Colin White is not an established player with a good track record.
By definition, what you get for a pick is potential. |

Lehner is 24
Big difference. You'd hope Lehner establishes himself this upcoming season |

This is the only thing that still gets me with this trade. I understand Colin White is a good prospect, but until he is in the league consistently, you can't say that Murray overpaid. I never would give a 1st rounder for a goalie, but he traded a pick for 2 NHL players (right, one was only for a year), but if the other guy never plays in the league then he won the trade almost regardless of what Lehners future holds. |

Im not sure that you are disagreeing with me. Im well aware that Colin white is not an established player. My point is, if Murray was going to trade the pick it should have been for a more established sure thing player. Not a huge question mark in Lehner |

From what I heard, he's supposed to be here in Buffalo rehabbing all offseason and getting conditioned properly, supposedly he couldn't be cause of the concussion he had prior to coming to the Sabres. So with working out everyday since mid April up until October, being an athlete to begin with, he should be in good health and good form to really dominate at the position.
He's shown flashes when he played to be the #1 guy. I really hope this works out since there is a First rounder involved in getting him. |

Age for a goalie is also a lot different as well though... have to take that into consideration. |

The one thing we don't know is who Murray would have picked if he kept 21. He might of passed on White.
It's still a bad trade. The value was off. Even if Lehner turns out. |

I understand your injury comment, but he is in the NHL not AHL. He just gets injured.

Yea that will always be a question, looking back in 3 years, I am sure there is a player taken after 21 that we "could" have had that would have been a steal, but your right, would Murray have taken that player? We will never really know. |

So if Lehner turns into Hasek, it's a bad trade? For 21 overall who you don't even know if they ever make the NHL? |

Whether it was White, Koneckny, Samsonov, Boeser..... All I can say is i would rather have one of those guys in my system right now (my opinion) |

Yea, the value of the trade is still bad on our end
We gave up a 1st and took on a cap dump. |

The "cap dump" played pretty well and provided our young guys veteran leadership... I hated the throw in at first and i was 100% ok with it at the end of the year. |

Which is fine but taking Legwand was a favor to OTT
You don't volunteer fr a 4 million dollar 4th liner.
Lehner might be really good, but goalies are found everywhere. It's just another example of Murray only caring about guys he's wanted for a long time |

The Lehner trade was a bad trade. I don't understand how you can sit here and say you are OK with it. At this point we need to hope he can be an above average reliable #1 goaltender for us because that's the price we payed for him and something he hasn't proven within his 6 years in the league so far. |

What's more likely:
Lehner plays like a number 1 goalie
Or
Any of those guys become legitimate top sixers
That's the only question that should be asked. I also don't have an answer one way or the other. |

I think both are very likely actually. Chad Johnson has played like a number 1 goalie at times as well |
