I love all this talk about Laine and crazy trade proposals. For once the Leafs have a no-brainer luxury asset handed to them by the hockey gods, after their long, long history of bad drafting, throwing away picks entirely and having no centre since Sundin. The first pick is a formality. The speculation is just soothing white noise to enjoy. Wake me up for picks #30 and #31. - Zezel
Have a feeling they'll package both for a mid round pick to get a Dman.
Then, probably draft a youngin goalie (if they dont trade for one instead)
Of note here, they have a lot of picks and a limited # of contracts they can dish out. Unlike last year's draft, they're not looking for volume. |

It wouldn't surprise me, they do have flexibility now that they have so many picks and prospects for a change. It'll be interesting to see what they do. |

Have a feeling they will be looking to trade the picks + for a NHL ready D-man |

You have to be out of your mind to suggest Reilly and Nylander plus. |

This draft class is WEAK after 15. So this isn't even remotely close.

I'm sure somebody has already posted this, but this has got to be the dumbest blog I've read yet. So Toronto is going to trade their first, Reilly, plus prospects, etc. for Winnipeg's first? If they are that high on Laine, wouldn't they just draft him with the 1st overall selection and keep all of the other resources? Put me on the list that says if Toronto wants Laine they pick him with their pick and keep their resources. E5 |

Ummm no
They are inferring that Toronto wants BOTH picks.
They are talking about Pittsburgh's pick which isn't that valuable as some here think it is. a 26-30th pick in a weak draft. |

It's not a crazy price tag for Laine. That sad, no way Toronto does it. |

I remember back before the draft when getting Laine would have been a dream come true. Now we have Matthews but that's not good enough, Now we want both?
You dumb bastards!

So JvR, a young 50-60 point player (without a #1 center, on the worse team in the league), already at the NHL level
A late 1st round pick + the #1 pick in the 2nd round (2nd-3rd liners @ NHL level in terms of potential)
A young projected top 6 prospect (previously 1st round pick, 22nd overall)- likely a 2nd line player
And Connor Brown, top OHL scorer in 2014, top franchise record scorer, top scoring right winger, the nominee for OHL's top Canadian player of the year, who currently has 8 points in 10 games in the AHL playoffs.
All those forrrrr..an 18 yr old with the potential to score around 60-70+ points per year.
Essentially trading a package of players potentially worth around 150-200 points at the NHL level for 1x potential 60-70+ point player
Yea, no, im good.
If you're trading JvR for Laine, you're essentially swapping players, and hoping Laine gets an extra 20 points to make it worth the extra package you're gonna send with JvR out the door.
Given's JvR's age, there's zero reason to do that.
And if you got Stamkos coming, maybe? I think he'd rather play with someone a bit more experienced at the NHL level, than not. Basically saying I dont expect Laine to help dictate play as much as he will 2-4 years from now, for example. Not knocking on his talent.
Also, if you're Winnipeg, you'd have to be stupid to trade this way, unless you're getting something like a young #1 Dman in return (good luck finding one for a trade).

Seriously, why would Hextall, who has been VERY consistent about sticking to his plan, just blow it all up to do that deal?

The Jets are not trading the #2 pick and definitely not for prospects. They have one of the deepest prospect pools in the league now. If anything they move the #22 pick from Chicago and package in a prospect or two to try and pry a D-man from a team up against the cap.
Something like this:
#22, Petan, Kosmachuk to LA
Martinez to Winnipeg.
This makes sense for both teams as it gives LA flexibility to sign Looch etc. |

I have difficulty with the idea that a draft class gets deemed weak or even strong. I remember the year of the NuHop draft. It was regarded as being very weak. Yet if you look at the actual draft results a few years later there are some very good players that are playing full time and with a very strong track record (Schieffle et. al.). Sometimes when scouts talk about the quality of the draft they are speaking from the perspective of their team and the opportunities they might have. If, you are the Leafs this year, you believe it is a strong draft. A few years from now, the Jets will probably look back and think it was a remarkable draft. |

So, I'm guessing a package of RJ Umberger, Michale Raffl, Andrew MacDonald, and Matt Read won't get the job done. |
