I dont disagree but we also need wingers for Kadri and Matthews and Stamkos and he's so cap friendly. I think they can add a dman with picks and prospects. Or I hope, at least - systemtool
I agree, but if they lose him in 2 years for nothing because they can't trade him at the deadline - as a result of contending. What would you think of a first line of Marner, Matthews and Tkachuk? A line that would be together for 5 years or more. Big time skill and some grit too.

Yeah, luckily we have two more seasons - but if he puts up two more 30 goal seasons he'll be in the $6-$7 range for sure. And that's fine. He's currently our only 1st line forward. Paying great players the amount they deserve will result in a great team. Eventually... - Njuice
Will get pretty tricky if Stamkos is on the team making 10.5 a year and jvr making 6 to 7 probably closer to 7, look at Bobby Ryan's contract. |

JVR got 30 goals once .(exactly 30) Playing with Kessel.
Just saying - pinksocked
18 goals in 48 games is more than a 30 goal pace. then he got 30goals in 80 games. Then 27 goals(close enough) and last year 14 goals in 40 games.
He's basically a 27-31 goal pace player on a garbage leaf team. And btw playing with Kessel doesn't boost anybody's stats. he's only good when he cares - playoffs and 10% of the regular season. |

I don't know if I agree.
JVR is not an old man, and is right there with Rielly and Kadri as the "prime" players that the team currently has (ie. not vets, not rookies)
He is a 30 goal scorer on a team that lost more 1 goal games than most of the league and is on a super affordable deal for 2 more years.
Who knows what kind of gem Hunter snipes with the PIT pick.
The argument about paying him in 3 years is the same logical fallacy spewed about being handcuffed by a Stamkos signing.
"a 30 goal forward is a 30 goal forward, but the 4th overall could be anything! It could even be a 30 goal forward!" - WingmanWillie
Nice closing line. I'll take JVR - a 30 goal forward today anyday! |

If we get stammer Bozak is traded the next day. Otherwise he's gone at this deadline, and he will fetch a nice return. Very good player - but he's quickly moving down the depth chart in Toronto. - Njuice
I agree, can't see the Leafs having a 4th line centre getting $4 million plus. Not a chance.

Well hopefully we do get into cap trouble like Chicago. Too many great players we have to ship some out in trades. That is not actually a problem. It's how dynasties get made.
Remember too that some of these prospects won't be getting huge contracts. Like Nylander will be due to sign soon. He won't be an $8mil player - and even if he is, awesome be have a Tarasenko. Nylander signs in 2 seasons and by then he'll be at best a 60 point guy and possibly still sketchy on D. So $6mil at most. And so on... |

I think they have him locked up for 2 more years so those discussions probably don't start until next summer. - The Law
Typically I would agree.
But this management team doesn’t come across as a group that sits back and passively waits for things to happen.
NTC’s significantly reduce trade value. I don’t think you miss an opportunity to max trade value because you’re waiting to hold discussions closer to the contract end date. Nothing stopping Lou from asking a few questions now. |

Too many good players, can't pay em all?
Sheesh, what a terrible problem to have.
I'm quite certain that good players are tradeable more often than not, and can likely command a high pick and prospect, both of which are fairly cheap cap-wise

Let me see, Montreal Has Beens - Get used to the Leafs beating the shiiit out of Montreal for the next decade or two. And enjoy Petry and Subban and the front office from hell. - winsix
Lol. Subban? Really dude?
It was a season from hell, I wouldn't be so quick to judge.
Galchenyuk was 2nd in goals after the allstar break. He lost a whole year of development, now he's catching up. We have our franchise center.
Beaulieu is becoming a stud defenceman. Pateryn has turned into a great stay at home d. Plus a few of the kids on d are looking really good.
A 6'7 230 pound 3c who doing really well.
Gallagher who almost had a carreer year despite being injured for two months.
Patches 30-40 goal scorer.
Mr Carey Price and solid goalies in the pipeline.
A top 10 pick in a really strong /deep draft.
The next 20 years eh?

Adding a #1 pairing dman is really important. There are two ways to go about it. One is a sign a big name free agent. Both Hedman and Burns are UFA after next year - Tampa and SJ will likely make them big offers. Baring that, drafting is the only other way. With a dman - that takes some time. This year's crop is probably 3 years away from being effective. Leafs will probably need help sooner. Middle of the road free agents like Petry in Montreal is not the answer. Overpaid $5 million players are the worst possible signings for a team.

I guess what I meant was that ( I think ) they can't give him an extension/new contract until next summer at the earliest. So how meaningful would a discussion about the next contract be today? There will be new Caps, new comparables, new limitations, another year on his resume - they could talk about intentions but money would be virtually irrelevant to talk about today. |

I also wonder if Zaitsev and Carrick make Gardiner expendable?..... |

Love them both - Think we want a ringer to play with Rielly though. No Ekblads in this draft.

I'd say that Rielly Gardiner Carrick Zaitsev + 2 others that can be sprinkled up and down the pairings will be it for the foreseeable future unless one of them is packaged up to get a really studly d-man. |
