To get rid of Lupul we would need an opposing GM who:
1) Is really desperate for some offense
2) Has not been on the internet or read a paper for 2 years
3) Has no pro scouts
4) Owes Uncle Lou a big favour - Rang
Lupul to Detroit for Pavel and a good pick?
If Pavel leaves for Russia, his 7 million dollar contract is still on the books for Detroit for one more year.
We take on a little more cap hit for only one year?
Now, could a team needing to hit the cap floor offer more or better? Maybe.
But its just an idea |

Did I read this right?
Did the Leafs trade Phaneuf and took back no long term contracts, AND retained no salary?
I can't believe they did this. - Aetherial
We did take on dead weight in Michalek and Cowan. Greening looks like a decent 4th liner and Lindberg is in tough to be in the Marlies lineup. Hopefully the second rounder turns into a decent player because otherwise it's a fairly even deal in my view. |

I think you're underestimating the cap flexibility this trade gave the Leafs. He has a 7M cap hit through 2021. |

It's not that you'll be worse, just that it's more of a treading water thing than anything. |

Meh...it was a one year deal.
There is really no downside to it. |

The "bad" salaries coming back occur at a time when the Leafs have the cap space.
Getting rid of that contract is a win.
A budget team like Ottawa paying that kind of money for that term for Phaneuf is a lose.

Fair enough, but in the short term we considerably weaken an already weak defense.
I get that it's all about tanking but I really think fans in Toronto underestimate Phaneuf. Certainly not a #1 d-man but a decent #2 on a middle of the pack team and #3 on a good team. Not his fault Nonis overpaid him. |

Agreed from a salary perspective. From a hockey perspective, not so great a deal. |

Oh I dunno. That's all they were doing up until, well, last year, really. |

You can't separate the two anymore. Everything MUST be done in the context of the current and future salary structure. |

We all know that if Leafs want to get better.. they need to get a goalie. Bernier is a lost cause. Sparks & Bibeau can't even be consistant in the AHL and it's pretty much their fault right now they're down 0-2 in the 3rd round. |

I agree, but at the same time shipping out a contract like that for a few short term contracts is a win. In the mean time, you will have some younger players come up and play bigger minutes along with the addition of Zaitsev.
I think when you look back at the Phaneuf trade in a few years it'll be huge due to all the contracts that may need to handed out/the possible addition of Stamkos. |

Honestly, if Tampa makes the finals, I see them winning the cup. Not sure if that helps Stammers decision to stay or leave.
If he leaves, the leafs will be in the mix, but I feel he'll sign elsewhere for more money.
9-9.5 is the max I would offer Stammer. - Fakepartofme
As long as stamkos is unsigned, it’s a possibility to come here. Who knows what impact a SC win has on that.
I think a trade like that for lupul could work.
In that trade, i imagine the pick is whatever lupul as a player (contract aside) is worth.
A team like AZ might be a better fit though. They have crappy expiring contracts in vermette and michalek to offer up and may want the caphit.
