Seems like benning is a guy not be used to his strengths.
Good enough at drafting to lead you through a few rebuilding years … just to be punted once the cupboards are stocked.
Though I have to say, watching him from afar steer a rudderless ship is much more entertaining. - Tumbleweed
Agreed.
Having him fulfill a similar role to Mark Hunter would probably be more ideal for Vancouver. |

Or more term.
Regardless, that's pretty horrific. |

It honestly feels like the Leafs thread from around 2010-2012... some folks just outright hating management and every move, and others blindly defending every move because "reasons".
In all honesty, there's no "one" tried and tested way to build a winner (though good draft picks would be the most important ingredient), but there are dozens of ways in which a management group can sewer a team... sadly for you folks, Benning appears to be better at the latter than the former - lumlums
His drafting will be the only thing that keeps him employed with the Canucks. Even that won't save him in the end, as long as he continues to build a prospect pool I'll continue to put up with him. I still think he's an idiot though. |

That's completely false. He's not at all a bad player.
What you're essentially saying is "every way I think is valid and believe in to track hockey players, says Gudbranson is a bad player. - MJL
Or maybe he's coach used him more in his own end against some tough lines, but I forgot....All NHL players are equal.
Wash, rinse repeat.

I guess you have to pay him according to comparable players like Ladislav Smid and Andy McDondald. |

Absolutely, we throw all the players in one big pile, and then throw all the shot attempts in one big pile, and we judge them all the same. Not exactly, but not far from it, either. The issue isn't the science, it's the data. Garbage in, garbage out. |

His comment about "Well, I played the draft lottery simulator at night and it didn't give good results so I went to bed disappointed.... but in the morning it worked out better so I felt better about this again" will go down in the Hockey quote hall of fame |

I definitely side with the analytics crowd on this one—Yost's article on TSN is great.
I do think Benning improved the Canucks D, but that's not saying much, and the mediocre D corps was mostly his doing anyway.
The cost was way too steep.
The Canucks would have been better off if they'd kept their assets, drafted one of Johansen, Clague, or Dineen, and stayed the course.
I would have felt better about this deal if Benning had used the pick he'd gotten in the Hamhuis deal, instead of the Canucks early 2nd...oh wait.. |

Nobody is going to trade for the Twins, and its pointless at this stage to buy out some of the other players. They have kept the best of their youth and will look to build on that at a later date .This time frame in which the Nucks have to do the scorched earth rebuild is kinda silly |

Teams might trade for the twins if
A) they agree to be separated
B) Van retains salary |

I don't know poop about Jared McCann. What I do know is that Gudbranson has been horrible since he arrived in the NHL. |

What you have is one group of people - guys like Nick Kypreos - who are 'old school' and think a big tough dman who was picked 3rd overall is automatically awesome.
On the other end of the spectrum, you have people who simply look at the numbers Gudbranson has put up - doesn't score, doesn't prevent scoring - who ask 'why would you trade for a below-replacement level player?'
Since the former views this trade as a "head scratcher for Florida" and the latter as the worst trade yet by the guy already considered the worst GM in hockey.
So what you have is a microscosm of a debate that continues to go one. But it's a dumb debate, I'll give you that. It's a dumb debate because literally every way we have to track hockey players says Gudbranson is a bad player. - James_Tanner
I really just have issue with making this an "eye-test" vs "analytics" issue, regardless of what type of player Gudbranson is. The trade was made to fill a need, they believe that Gudbranson can do that. It has nothing to do with McCann's analytics numbers unless the Canucks were planning on moving him to D. Maybe Benning is a bit old school and looks at it from that perspective but to compare the two side by side as a symbol of eye test vs analytics is misleading and kind of self serving IMO. |

B) Van retains salary - DeflatedPucks Meh, why would they do that right now though ??People are making far too much of the Nucks moving some lower draft picks and prospects .Its not as if the traded Horvat, the 5th or anything really substancial.Them looking to try and improve the team moderately isnt something that will change the eventual out look and .Probable more in depth rebuild that is likely to take place at a later date
