If we r building a new core for the post Sedn era then EG fits in great. |
|
|
|
There's some good players in place, but definitely not enough to call a true "core" yet. At this point in time, Benning can't afford to be giving out picks like candy... - lumlums
The Canucks core is Sedins Edler Tanev Hansen. It is slowly changing and Bo is stepping up as well as Sutter |

Pretty much says it all.

No one (me) ever said build only thru the draft, you build a core thru the draft and then you surround them when the time is right. The Canucks don't have a core to surround yet. - LeftCoaster
Yost is the worst, his "analysis" is always incomplete. He mentioned in his piece how Jackman and Hjalmarsson are good but doesnt show their statistics in comparison to Gudbranson who supposedly plays a similar role. Instead he lumps him in with every defenseman in the NHL, regardless of role and opportunity (zone starts) and made a generic comment that the deal was bad without even evaluating McCann. I give Tanner's take on this trade more value but even he acknowledges this trade might be ok for the Canucks though he has some doubt because advanced stats seem to disagree |

One last example of the Centre of the Universe mentality...
Canada's Mens Soccer team is situated in Toronto not Vancouver.
Last time i looked soccer can be played all year long here. - Nighthawk
Seriously man.... get over it. Toronto has a much larger population (before you even consider the surrounding area), excellent transportation hubs, and is much closer to the centre of the population of the country. Vancouver is a pretty awesome city, but Toronto is a much more logical choice. |

They just filled one hole for a player that they had plenty of other ones . - VANTEL
Who are the other ones three years down the road? Horvat is the one and only center under the age of 25. Who's gonna play center if you don't develop your own talent for the future, that's my issue.
Henrik is 36 years old and Sutter sucks as a top six NHL center. |
|
|
|
So gudbranson is worth more than the 4 overall now? Man, you’re going to be disappointed.
Edmonton has nurse/rienhart and potentially gyrba that play the same game as gudbranson. Kinda moot anyways. - Tumbleweed
Actually it was reported Edm fans slamming Oilers mgmt. for not signing EG |

So many wasted picks, Baertschi was a win, other than that nothing has really worked. |

He is 24 . You don't think he can get better? - VANTEL
Yes but likely only to a certain extent. Many have said the same thing about Sbisa when he was acquired, even though the player is relatively young, generally you have a pretty good idea of what a player will be by the time they play 300 games.
McCann is a lot harder to predict based off of 69 games and 4 year younger.
Johansen, Fisher, Turris among others all had very similar(points wise) 19 year old seasons. IMO he needs some time in the AHL but that doesn't mean he can't become a good top 6 C in this league. |

Tanev is excellent, as is Bo. Sedins will be retired before you will truly be competitive again, and Hansen is a decent player but has yet to hit 40 points in a season so can't really be considered "core" plus is now the wrong side of 30 (like Edler). What you need is to establish a timeline as to when you'll be successful (say five years) and build a core to match. IMO that core needs to comprise of two quality D, an above average NHL starting G, and at least three top quality forwards. At the minute you have Tanev, a great young G in Demko (plus a decent current guy in Markstrom), but a lack of true top NHL forwards (Bo is great, and Boeser looks to be solid - JV is a question mark as he seems to make some dumb decisions despite having talent). The biggest issue for me is the lack of prospects on D, especially as at that five year mark you won't likely have Hamhuis, Edler etc... |

Benning needs to look beyond the Sedins, again, my issue is he's losing me but trying to do both build and compete. |

Using that analogy is the US mens team in NY?
Soccer players don't train in blizzards n ice for a reason.
Any city eg Edmonton can fill the stands for soccer. |

reinhart isn't an nhl player yet, nurse is and will get much better. reinhart needs much work on balance, skating and strength, and even if he does improve in all of those areas they're likely looking at a smaller hal gill.

As somebody who grew up playing soccer, you play in whatever damn conditions are out there... I've even been out for games in Edmonton when it's been -15 to -20 out |

If you consider what it does to the line up, it can. Who gets bumped out of the D lineup? Also, this takes resigning Hamhuis off the table.
Also, if Benning doesnt want McCann as a bottom 6 C and doesnt think he's a future #1 C,,, then his age is redundant. - boonerbuck
I'm not so sure, I think it depends on what the goal is, bringing him back would really stabilize the D and help them win games.

he does suck at being a top six center, he always has. He a good faceoff guy, he's a good penalty killer, he can insulate Horvat...but that doesn't mean he's a good option as your second line center.
If you can't see he's not a good option there you're out to lunch! He's a good third line center at best.
Logan Couture is a good second line center, Jeff Carter is a good second line center....Sutter is most certainly not! |
