The goal is that with Stamkos added, and who knows what else, the '17 first round pick would be in the 2nd half of the first round. What horrible loss is that if you're adding Stamkos?

I missed that one on the Sporcle I posted earlier today...I did get the masterpiece that is Zagrapan right though! Man...having that instead of Stamkos would be so much better...

Any team that has playoff aspirations and has a legit chance at them and knows that draft pick isn't going to be in the top half of the draft.

Throw in the old Islanders wordage and make it a conditional 1st if he signs or a lottery protected pick.

The point is if you want Steven Stamkos and the price is there you need to decide if its worth it. I think it is. The 22nd pick in the 2017 draft for a 26 year old future hall of famer...

a bidding war is the whole point of being a UFA. Thats what the player and agent want. Why would they give up that option?

What I don't understand:

I see a problem with trading for his rights at all, no matter the pick. If you know he is going to sign, you would just wait. However, you can't know that otherwise is tampering. Therefore, are we in the situation where we can trade a 1st or 2nd round pick for a guy who could wait a couple months and then sign somewhere else? Only way you do a 1st is if you know 100% he is going to sign, and therefore you can just wait til August 15th anyways. What am I missing?

I guess my point is, trading for his rights doesn't do anything for you at all including stopping him from creating a bidding war. If we traded anything for his rights and he doesn't want to sign here we have no "female dog".

I guess I'd pay a 3rd if I had to, in order to have him signed before the draft...lot to pay for knowledge.
