What about J. Trouba? With Winnipeg's pending RFA's, is there an opportunity there? - skidmark
With Trouba and WPG, I think you would need to put competing RFA offers on a couple players in order to make it tough for them. They have a fair amount of space. 50M spent compared to 68M for the BJs. |

Saad, Jenner are safe....now you they only can protect 1 of Atkinson, Rychel, Wennberg.
You twisted my arm, I guess Avs will take Atkinson for the cap relief and to save them from losing him for nothing. |

If the only solution is to trade the team's leading scorer and keep their best prospect in Europe then the Oil or ANYBODY ELSE should put the offer in - Matt_Henderson
It’s cam Atkinson. You keep jones over Atkinson 11 times out of 10. C’mon man.
Put JP in the ahl then. Not every 18 year-old needs to be in the nhl to start…especially if it costs you seth jones. This is just common sense.
You act as if edm is the only team that can offer sheet him. I suspect there will be lineup of teams with offer sheets if all it costs is a 1st and 3rd … which is why it’ll cost way more than that. |

I thought the newest thing is that NMC are automatically protected, but don't use up any spots.
I'd tweak it to say any current NMC are in this group, but you can't go out and sign everyone to NMC going forward and have them being immune. |

I want the Oilers to Offer Sheet him, but the logic applies to all other teams. Atkinson had 53 points, lead their team in scoring, and is on a long term deal at 3.5M
Yeah, you keep Jones at his expense. But he's supposed to be a solution going forward, not a casualty. It REALLY hurts to lose that kind of offense. |

3. On the no-movement and no-trade clauses, Daly said the latter wouldn’t prevent a player from being exposed in the draft. A no-move clause, however, means a team would have to protect that player and they would count against a team’s total.

Of course the Jackets will want to match. The problem is they would go into the 10% overage to match and they couldnt hope to sign anyone else before trading others for pennies on the dollar IF they can get NMCs waived. It's a summer's worth of work just to keep Jones and play the 3rd overall pick if he makes the team and at the end of the day the team will be worse than it is now.
Laugh off a deal at 6M all you want because you think Columbus will match, but even an offer that low will make life for their brass a living hell. The Bruins traded Hamilton away for next to nothing before they even had a chance to make those tough decisions. It's clearly a threat that holds weight in the NHL community, even if you dont think it should. - Matt_Henderson
So... you want Edmonton to spend a week of early July waiting to hear what Jackets decide, unable to use the cap space for anything else, all for the benefit of making another team's life harder? A team that isn't even your conference? |

Almost. The benefit isnt screwing over CBJ. The benefit is getting a RHD without giving up a roster player. And obviously in this scenario the team trades for a different RHD at the Draft the week before. |

Boston actually offered Hamilton right around what he signed for, he wanted out of Boston. Jones has shown no signs that he wants out of Columbus.
You can offer sheet him (and hope that he signs) all you want, but Columbus will match and deal with the consequences later unless it's a ridiculous amount of money that includes multiple firsts. |

But you WILL NOT BE GETTING HIM...Columbus will match (assuming Jones even agrees to this mystical offer sheet) and then will be giving some low value deals to other teams, possibly ones in Edmonton's division, in order to make the cap work. |

The "mystical offer sheet" isnt something from Game of Thrones. It's a real thing that NHL teams have at their disposal. Edmonton has Jones' little brother in their system, they've had interest in the player before. If CBJ cant/wont go higher than what puts them at the Cap with Jones right now, why WOULDNT he sign with Edmonton or anywhere? It's a business. He wants to get paid. |

Jones isn't going to EDM unless by trade route, so why bother entertaining the idea of an offer sheet...?? |

While I'm at it, good luck finding takers for players on NMCs even IF they get waived because those players HAVE to be protected in the coming expansion draft. Even if team X wants Nick Foligno for dirt cheap, they need to want the player so bad that they would expose someone else in the org to the expansion draft. |

roughly 11M and that's without moving Eberle, Yak, or Pouliot |

Still, I think Columbus signs jones and finds a way to make the cap work.
After signing jones, w.karlsson may be tough to squeeze in.
For a depth move with higher probability of working, I’d offer sheet karlsson. $1.5M costs you a 3rd. Gets you a young forward for your bottom 6, decent defensively and some offensive upside.

And it still leaves the Oilers without a proven top pairing defenceman. Another gamble isn't something they need, they need a sure thing. Should Set be a lock to be a top pairing guy? Sure, but things don't always go as expected. Forget Jones and go after someone about 3 years older and proven. Over pay if they have to. |

An offer sheet threat is a great idea though even for a crazy offer it likely won't work. Columbus will move someone to make it work. Heck you are allowed to go 10% over the cap in the off season then make moves to get under so they can match Jones and deal with the consequences after.
The Jackets will match anything under the $5.6M, obviously. Jones is worth that regardless. They will have a tough decision at $7.5M though. The return is the Oilers' 1st, 2nd, & 3rd in 2017. If the Oilers miss the playoffs then it isn't bad and potentially a steal but anywhere from 15+ in the draft and it is a loss. I believe Columbus will match.
Only chance IMO is if the Oilers offer $7.75M+ and give up the extra 2018 1st. Then the return might be worth not having Jones at $8M. |
