Forgive me for carrying this over from the last blog...but it seemed for a minute there like there was an actual hockey discussion
Completely off-topic, but:
With respect to RJ Umberger, is mutual termination an option?
If the Flyers buy him out this summer, Umberger gets $1.5M for the next 2 years for a total of $3M. However, what if the Flyers offerred him $3.25M for a mutual termination this year? He'd make an extra $250K, he'd get it in a lump sum (you could tweak the number when taxes are factored in), and the Flyers don't have to carry the extra $1.5M cap hit for next year.
Whadda ya think?
Edit: Mike Richards will be getting paid by the LA Kings until 2032. Yes, 2032.

I am seeing on twitter that the 25% of the salary cap rule is getting axed, which essentially means for the Flyers that they wont have to protect RJ Umberger |

The 25% rule isn't the main concern, it's the fact that he has a NTC that does not expire until July 1st. From what I've heard, all NTCs need to be protected.
And we were trying to have a legit hockey discussion, save for one unnamed bumhole who would rather talk poop than discuss hockey. |

NTC and NMCs do not protect against buyouts in any case, and Umberger was probably going to get bought out this summer regardless of the expansion draft.
A mutual termination would make no sense from Umberger's standpoint. The Flyers would, no doubt, love it.
He will be bought out. |

If not for the expansion draft, I would have let him rot for one more year. However, because of his NMC, they need to be rid of him somehow or other. |

I'm struggling to come up with a realistic situation where a mutual termination would ever make sense from the player's perspective. |

It's the NMCs that need to be protected. Bill Daly was saying yesterday that since being picked in an expansion draft isn't getting traded, NTCs won't need to be protected and any player with one would be exposed to the draft if not. |

What does the NHLPA think about that? I wonder if this issue was discussed during the last CBA talks. |

Do you really believe the league would make teams protect pending UFA's w/ NMC's? The expansion draft would be what... at most 7-10 days before July 1... I really doubt that owners/GMs would stand for having to expose additional players based on some trivial technicality. |

The Flyers should apply for a second franchise, take the bad contracts from the Flyers, trade all of their players for draft picks, then trade the draft picks to the Flyers for Jeff Carter (we need to acquire him so that we can trade him again), and subsequently fold.. |

A player making a small amount of money relative to his cap hit whose team no longer wants to pay his cap hit, and who feels that he could earn more money per year as a free agent. |

This is what I was getting at with my statement. There were rumors that 25% of the cap needed to be made available to the expansion team, and the only way that was truly possible was if pending UFAs were included in that (i.e. pending UFAs with NMCs )
I am interpreting this as pending UFAs will remain pending UFAs. That is still unclear, but hopefully that eliminates the NEED to buyout Umberger, even though I still would not mind if he was (or LTIR'ed) |

The mayor posted this late in the last blog:
https://www.theguardian.c...uins-how-to-be-hockey-fan
I like it, but I'm guessing it was written in Toronto, so I hate it.
Also, analytics arguments??? - jmatchett383
@DownGoesBrown is very funny.
Step 8: Pick a side in the Analytics v Old School debate
See those people who wound up on the other side? You hate them more than anything. And more importantly, you will never pass up an opportunity to let the world know that. Hockey fans have very strong opinions about analytics, and they are convinced that everyone else wants to hear those opinions at all times. If somebody on the other side expresses a thought that you disagree with, you are honor-bound to spend the next six hours of your life letting the world know about it.
lol
I'd almost rather listen to a vegan explain his/her choice. |

why not, owners and GMs are standing for letting there be 8 out of 14 teams in the west in the playoffs vs 8 out of 16 teams from the east
that's a lot of $ gone from an east team
seems like they'll do whatever gary wants |

the difference between tanking and rebuilding. (Hint: Rebuilding is what your team does, tanking is what everyone else does.) |

Yeah, even if they choose to go that route, RJ is an easy BO. Unlike Monsieur Hartnell.

If they are required to protect pending UFAs with NMCs, is Umberger allowed to waive his NMC without being involved in a transaction? |

Sobotka is coming back to the NHL, or at least wants to if St Louis will pay him. Could be a very interesting player to trade for to be our 3C. Fantastic possssion player capable of scoring 35-40 points. |
