And yet, despite the fact that it was on New Year's Day, the first Winter Classic was the highest rates regular season game in the US the league had. Poor ratings for the Winter Classic aren't because of the day it's on. It's because the novelty of the event has worn off. The poor ratings of the Stadium Series debunk the myth that New Year's Day kills them. Also, the NBA has a quadruple header every Christmas Day. The NHL would still have a big ratings competition it wouldn't be able to win.

down here in the south, the winter classic is an after thought, due to college football on that day

your not going to gain any new fans

as for the nba, there are many people who want nothing to due with the nba and would welcome an option

as for the highest ratings ever, when you start out with nothing, next to nothing is not hard to achieve

The ratings on the Christmas event say otherwise. The notion that the NHL can even come close to what the NBA gets in ratings, even with the most competent of marketing strategies and channel placement is a severely flawed one. It's just the nature of the sport. People grew up playing hockey in Canada. The US, and its much larger population, has far more folks growing up with basketball. In fact, if you live in an urban area, which is where most of the population is located, despite the suburban sprawl of the last 50 or so years, that's all they play for the most part. The NHL has its problems doing things right, but it's main problem isn't that. It's that most do not identify with the sport.

White guys in their mid 30s aren't the dominant demographic, in this country, not even close. Networks and advertisers care about eyeballs on the television, that's it.

And even if you use that demographic as a key, poll the same group outside of a Buffalo or a Pittsburgh about the NHL, that percentage is about 60. There's a reason WGR plays the NBA Finals on the radio and not the Stanley Cup Finals, even in this self-proclaimed greatest hockey market in America.

Im 43. Last basketball game i saw was jordan in the finals in june of 97.

Interesting stat from david epsteins book "the sports gene"- 15% of american men between the ages of 20-40 that are legitimately 7 feet tall are playing in the nba. Also, your wingspan is supposed to be extremely close to your height. There is a disproportionate number of players in the nba that have wingspans that are far longer than their height. So not only are they tall, they have extremely long arms.

Ill take baseball and hockey. More relatable. You still have to win the genetic sweepstakes to play professionally, but it seems more realistic.

your not alone

I am 45, most of my friends around that age are in the same boat

funny thing, when I get a hockey game put on at the bar, the patrons are much more interested then they are a nba game or a soccer game

they are dropping the ball on marketing in the non hockey markets and in time we will be right back where we were with the lock outs

I had hopes that ball hockey would help. Its more expensive than basketball, but it doesnt require ice time, lots of equipment, or learning to skate. It makes hockey relatable to kids who dont have resources for ice hockey. I didnt wanna watch golf on tv until my friends started going to the driving range. As far as the cup goes, its waaay too late. I think hockey, i think dark cold february nights and looking forward to a sabres game. By the time june rolls around, its 75 degrees and summer activities have started. Playoffs should be done by may.

First Stanley Cup game in SF/Santa Clara/San Jose history got absolutely crushed by the Warriors thunder game 7. A Warriors team that was all but assured to repeat. And both games were on cable, so you can't say "oh well, the NBA game was on ABC." I don't remember the exact ratings, but it was like a mid season rerun episode of "Rules of Engagement" against the "M*A*S*H" finale.

I live in the area you mentioned and I've said it before .......... the ONLY people interested in the Sharks are the season ticket holders ......... all 15k of them. That's it.

The Warriors on the other hand appeal to EVERYONE out here... Curry , Thompson, Green, Kerr .............. they are god-like in the Bay Area.

Why ? NHL players have about as much personality as a headstone is my opinion.

The Warriors Thunder game was on TNT, not ABC. Only the Finals are on ABC. The NHL has always put 2 games on NBCSN and the rest on NBC since it took over the TV rights back in 2005. This is nothing new.
Cleveland is not out of this series, not by a long shot. Even game 1 showed that the Warriors are goingto have match up problem with Irving and Kevin Love, let alone LeBron.

The NBA has always been more popular than the NHL and will continue to kill the league in ratings, no matter how much marketing or strategic placement of games the NHL does.

- buffalofan19

LOL ..... you're dreaming. Warriors will LET Cleveland win one game in Cleveland so they can wrap it up in Oakland in 5 games.

Cleveland would be a 5th seed in the West and the Clippers or Portland would beat them.

I never want to see Lebron spoken in the same breath as Jordan ever again.

He's 2-4, soon to be 2-5 in the finals.

He lacks that killer instinct.

Game 1 1st quarter his avg shot was 5 feet from the basket, rest of the game it was 10 feet.

Read that Chychrun lives three miles from the Pegula's went to school with Terry's youngest daughter and son and knows Terry.

I'd say that on top of the fact he fits a need and has the characteristics Tim likes in a player makes me think he'll be the pick if he's there at 8. Not saying it's who I want but all the factors are coming into play here. Weather it's a good idea or not.

I would say I hate when people talk poop about LeBron when they don't even watch the game Just saying When you make six straight finals that's pretty impressive
And it's a team sport when LeBron gets shut down his other players are supposed to step up which they dont Kevin Love should've been gone last year he's atrocious
They have been doing wrong moves after the next making this Cavs roster he will be back in Miami this summer and win his third ring

(frank) basketball. Worst rules in any sport. Refs are bad in all sports but awful is too generous for them in basketball..

Hockey and Football (even though football refs blow too) are the best two sports.
