you just posted a link that say horton's contract was not insured ... which is widely known. - Tumbleweed
I'm going from memory here so this may not be completely accurate. But Horton had a shoulder injury from the playoffs with Boston that required surgury when he signed as a free agent with CBJ. Because of the surgery the contract could not be insured until he cleared things medically plus some other hoops to jump thru. Well before he could qualify for insurance this back issue came to light. So his contract was never able to be insured. I believe that the medical insurance will cover some or all of the players actual contract cost. This has nothing to do with team cap or anything. Just who is on the hook to pay actual dollars to the injured player. So since the contract wasn't insured the CBJ were on the hook to foot the contract cost, which they would be happy to do if he were playing for them, but since he wasn't able to play they were having to pay millions to a guy to just sit at home. This is obviously not a problem for MLSE. |

you may want to read up on that.
Players that sign with existing LTI that come back IE blood clot; Cancer: cannot be insured nor can they be used as LTIR cap relief; nor can it bought out.
The team will have to pay out the entire contract as well have it count against the Cap figure. - Kinggilmour
1. He hasn't signed anything yet.
2. He played since the injury so I would consider the Injury....over. |

I think you need to follow the timing of contract signing and injury/condition.
Pre existing condition or not a pre existing condition, that sounds to me to be the deciding factor....I think. - underhill14
Horton signed with a pre existing condition and went on ltir with an uninsured contract which the poster said wasn't possible.

Are you saying insurance companies aren't willing to insure something that wasn't previously insurable because they are now deemed unable to play?
- burn
its not the insurance company...its the league that allows a team to use it as cap relief; there is a huge differnce |

You can google the difference |

Why do you tell people you know what you're talking about? Do you get excited by this?
You don't seem you understand what you're talking about, and it's pretty numerous watch you tell people to read up on stuff when you're wrong. |

You said you couldn't put uninsured contracts on ltir. Horton is uninsured and has been repeatedly on ltir.
Fail. |

There are 2 examples of uninsured contracts recently. Lombardi and Horton. Lombardi wasn't insured by Nashville cause the insurance was far to high due to his previous concussion issues. Horton COULDNT be insured because he was coming off an injury and was still injured when signed. Wasn't medically cleared when he signed. He missed the first half of the year with an injury after signing that contract, thus unable to insure.
This isn't the same as stamkos. If he's medically cleared this summer I dint know how or why he couldn't be insured. And insurance isn't/shouldn't be an issue to leafs. If that's the case only a few teams (maybe only one) would be able to fit him into cap and not be worried about uninsured contract. - burn
From what I understood with Horton was that CBJ chose NOT to insure him because he was medically cleared at the time. When his back went again, he was put on LTIR but CBJ had to pay out of their own pocket hence why they traded them. So, it was a bad call by CBJ because they could have played it safe anyway and pay the insurance premium just in case. |

No. Horton had surgery on his shoulder and couldn't be insured..... He didn't play for like 3months after the start of the season he signed in. |

Horton had two different injuries so there is that and the fact that he signed his contract while with one injury just not the one that put him out so... there is something in the order of operations.
The only thing I know for sure, insurance companies and labor contracts are tricky.
I would look at them in more of a case by case basis.
I would guess Kessel's contract is insured but maybe not for cancer.
Whatever it is and whoever said it doesn't matter to me. I just read Stamkos to the Leafs!!! |

I'm sure that both Columbus & Horton figured that the surgery would go great & that they would eventually be able to insure the nice contract that he just signed. They just didn't see that pesky degenerative back issue coming. Stamkos will likely be able to get himself insured eventually after enough time & passed tests. Insurance companies never want to pay you money so they won't gamble on you until you are a really safe bet. Thankfully, I think that MLSE would be "ok'er" with gambling 70 million on a player than the insurance company or almost Any other NHL clubs would be. |
