This is where I, and possibly Leafs brass, disagree
Leafs lost 15 1 goal games in regulation last year. Not to mention OT losses and Empty netter 2-goal losses.
That was with JVR hurt and Bernier and Sparks playin like sieves.
The roster will be vastly improved this season even without a goalie. Add a legit starter to that mix and I think they\, in fact, are a playoff team.
People have to stop talking about this like it's a given that they will be bottom 5 next year. Far from it

agree 100%
so many negative nellys in here..
I understand being cautious, but the rookies we have next year aren't exactly the type that'll need a lot of time to mature. Matthews, Nylander, Zaits, and Carrick should all step in no problem.. Brown didn't look out of place last year and Marner is also defensively responsible.
If they get a better goalie and get Stamkos (knock on wood) I think this team will surprise many people.. |

The Leafs were the best last placed team in a while lol. Lots of competitive games were lost in the last few minutes. I'm not going to assume they are going to start winning those close games next year or anything though. They may, they may not.
They'll be a really young team next year with lots of good and bad streaks I think. It's June and who knows what the team will look like in October but as it is now they're not a playoff team. |

We were a far better team this year then we were last year but still ended up in last place. I feel we will be a better team this year as well if only of the fact good prospects will finally start to arrive.
It is going to take awhile before these kids finish their learning curve and have a solid impact. Nylander and Marner for example if they make the team are not going to dominate like they did in the AHL and OHL like they did. It will take time. Matthews will be good but I don't know if he will get any more points then Eichel did his first year for example. A couple yrs from now is a whole differant story.
If you beleive we get Stamkos ( I don't) then the rebuild is over. We get the goalie and push for the playoffs. But I would rather a top 5 pick next year then make the playoffs and get bounced out in the first round. I think Mgmt. feels the same as they reapeadly have said they want to be a yearly condender. I think we need more bullits in the gun to do that.

Lucas Neilson: Gauging the Maple Leafs Roster Moving Forward
Overall Depth of the Club - Lucas.Neilson
To Anaheim
JVR, Kapanen, Sharks 2017 2nd, and the 29/30th, 56th and 61st picks in this years draft
To Toronto
Vatanen, Gibson and 24th overall
Anaheim gets a 1st line LW for Getlaf and Perry.
JVRs cap hit and contract gives the Ducks lots of cap room to resign Andersen long term and commit to him as their #1.
as well this doesn't rush Ritchie.
Kapanen adds top tier prospect depth on the RW for Anaheim.
with a late 1st and two late 2nd round picks in this draft, and another high 2nd from the Sharks in 2017, the Ducks will be able to restock the offensive and goaltending cupboards.
Boyle can be called up to backup Andersen or they can sign a FA backup.
Leafs get a top-4 right handed defensemen who will add depth to a very depleted/young blueline. Vatanen is 25 and could have a relative long career with Toronto.
the main piece is Gibson coming back.
Lou nailed down Brodeur and Schneider giving the Devils almost 25 years (still counting) of top notch goaltending.
Lou swings for Gibson who has been the highest rated goalie prospect since he was drafted.
with Bernier on the last year of his contract don't be surprised if he is moved at the trade deadline and Gibson takes over as #1.
as well Toronto does move up from 30th to 24th overall, and potentially this could be a precursor to the Leafs moving into the top-20 if they package the 24th and 31st overall picks.
oh and in the case you believe Gibson would fetch a bigger steak then switch him for Andersen and lose the 29/30th overall, or something to that extent. I'd be fine with Andersen as well if the price is right.
thoughts?

So more than our 1st line C last year? I'll take it!
Our roster will have a 2nd overall, 1st overall, 5th overall, 4th overall, 7th overall 8th overall, all from within the last 9 years, on the roster.
How many more of those do we need?
Give it up, gents. The finish low-draft high mentality was achieved. They have the 1st overall. They (frank)ing did it.

Ok..
Is Stamkos coming to TO? - Arctic_AARDVARK
He is in Toronto getting tests done on is bloo blot issue. If he passes without any red flags YES he will be a leaf. His contract is not issurable; so the team will do all due dillegence before committing any long term dollars.
The contract is set for 9.1/9.2 per season. |
