Here's a rude awakening for you: it's gonna take a hell of a lot before you're ready for ANYTHING meaningful.

There's something strange to me about playing the theme from Captain America after handing the Stanley Cup to Sidney Crosby.

My daughter used to play volleyball. Sometimes you'd run into a team that just focused on getting the damn thing back across - no set plays, no real strategy, just get it over as quick as possible and hope things go wrong for the other side.

We called it TShirt volleyball: they usually didn't have much of a program or budget for uniforms

The Pens "just shoot it" approach reminds me of TShirt volleyball.

I love it though. With the game changing and the shrinking of goalie pads (even more next year), teams need to start doing this more often as there are more gaps and cracks between the goalie's pads for odd deflections and "impossible" angled shots to go into the net.

I remember when joel quenneville would get angry after winning a game, but only have 23 shots on net and people thought he was strange for wanting to have more Shots total. Sullivan simply took that approach and ran with it. Granted there was some elite talent on that team, but still 36 shots a game compared to the opponents 21 mean they had 15 more chances to score. Simple but effective

Aside from maybe Dallas, they played the most entertaining brand of hockey of any team in this series.

Some teams still manage as though they can get by with top heavy lineups and it just cannot, will not work in today's NHL.

Maybe we're entertained by different things

I'm not saying the Pens didn't make great plays. But the beauty in the game is talent combined with hard work, not "blast away hope we get a lucky bounce."

That doesn't support the "Stamkos at all costs" stance.

Why so we can wait another 45 years ? how much longer do we need to keep " holding on " to players, picks and prospects.

Not pretty, but the NHL wants more goals. The more they ponder about making changes to various rules and regulations as well as pad size, there really is no reason not to start "blasting away" If they keep tweaking the game, I expect to see that style creep into the mainstream more and more, which as you said is not beautiful, but the average non-dedicated hockey fan (the ones bettmen wants) doesn't care about beauty, just goals and their "team" winning.

Crosby, Malkin and Kessel sounds pretty top heavy to me. Pens proved you need one stud D and a lightning in a bottle goalie. Maybe angry eyes Lehner can do that someday

I hate the Penguins with every fiber of my being, but you have to give it to them, San Jose wasn't even close. New Jersey was horrible to watch, but they won cups. You can't argue with that. If the Sabres won the cup being boring, I'd sign up for it.

That is not the game I saw out of them at all. They played like a team that was faster than their opponent and they knew it.

I like to call it "Strike when the iron is hot" Whenever an opportunity opened to shoot, they shot. Their speed and grit allowed them to gain space, but rather than try and start passing the puck around looking for beautiful one timers, they simply shot the puck. Pre-lock out, that logic would have gotten a coach run out of town, but they starting following that logic near the end of the regular season and just rolled with it all the way to a cup.

With the emphasis on shot blocking and taking away passing lanes, that style is making a comeback, similar to the shooting style game in the NBA that has made the big center the least important it has been in a long time.

It's easy to shut down a top line, or a couple of players. It's tough to stop 3 lines that are rolling.

Those aren't "top heavy" players.

The Penguins built their team around the same players they did in 2009. They just used different pieces.

"Top heavy" means that all the strength is on the top line or top two lines. This Pens team is 8 forwards deep of top 6 players.
