Those aren't "top heavy" players.

The Penguins built their team around the same players they did in 2009. They just used different pieces.

- buffalofan19

They never had anything close to the HBK line to take pressure off of 71 and 87 before

I thought he was talking about depth in the roster line 1,2,3,4 opps

It's easy to shut down a top line, or a couple of players. It's tough to stop 3 lines that are rolling.
- sbroads24

Yes, but very few of them were home grown players.

Kunitz, Kessel, Bonino, Hagelin, Cullen, and Fehr were all acquired from the outside. Not to mention Trevor Daley on the back end.

It is depth. Bryan Rust scored key goals. Do you think Nick Delauriers is capable of scoring 4 or 5 playoff goals?

Is Johan Larsson (Who I like) going to score at almost a PPG clip like Bonino did for 3 series?

Daley was OK but the guys who were already there were the difference makers.

"Top heavy" means that all the strength is on the top line or top two lines. This Pens team is 8 forwards deep of top 6 players.
- sbroads24

Having Kessel playing on the "third line" is a luxury.

Crosby Kuntiz together like always

The HBK line

Then the Malkin line

Has nothing to do with the prospect cupboard. Has everything to do with finding the right guys with good chemistry. Draft the studs and make the right trades.

I wanted Kessel so did homie. We were laughed at on here. Speed speed and more speed. The package the Pens gave up for him was a joke. Had the Sabres made that trade they would only be looking for a top 2 D and a top 9 winger that can play top 6 minutes if needed.

Hockey is all about synergy. Whole is better than the sum of the parts. Penguins are a great example of how important chemistry is in regards to finding which players elevate the other's game. I for one completely wrote them off a few games into the season because of how poor their chemistry was. Speed. Mental toughness. Trust. Synergy. I hope Tim Murray is as smart as I think he is.

Switching out Scudder for Daley was probably the biggest in season trade of the year. They probably don't make the playoffs if that doesn't happen. He was also their best defenseman in the first two rounds.

I'm not sure why that matters? This is the deepest team they have had. Depth won them this cup. Their leading scorer played away from the two guys they have built the team around year after year

If you don't have a deep cupboard or stock of picks, I'm not sure how you acquire a Phil Kessel or Nick Bonino. You don't find those guys often in FA

So since Kessel had so much success playing on the 3rd line getting good match ups, anyone else care to try and tell me I'm wrong that Evander Kane could thrive in that role?

I think he's countering your argument that you you have to hold picks and prospects rather than using them as currency for established players. Yknow, the moves you've been criticizing Murray for for the last 18 months.

Except that's not what I said. I said keep the cupboard full.

Hudson Fasching was acquired outside of the draft. I still consider him in the cupboard. Hopefully that clears it up
