I'm just saying it's a lot of pressure for A top 10 defenseman pick because if he's a Bust you basically wasted an opportunity to help your franchise when it's safer to draft one in the second round
Would you be more pissed if a defenseman was a top 10 draft choice and he busted or would you be pissed if he was a second round pick and he busted - GERBE!!!75PTS
But again, find and list all of the top pairing d-men (quality, could be a #3 on some team if they have great 1 and 2) across the NHL and find out how many were longshot draft picks in the last 10 years (non-1st round picks).
I just don't know that your #s will add up, especially when compared to the % of players selected after round 1 vs how many hit.
BTW, the number was 19. 19 d-men in that had the top 30 qualifying # of points this past season were picked in round 1 or 2. 13 of those were 1st rounders |

Draft picks are kind of funny math though, in a way.
A #2 overall is usually thought to be a lock, someone who has a chance to come in right away and will be a regular NHLer for years to come.
Factor that down to an 8th pick and yeah, you obviously hope he's playing for your team over the next 10 years, but I don't think 8th overalls are often considered locks to play all that quickly.
Reinhart as a #2 overall took a season away from the NHL - I would think 2 years (perhaps the max it might take?) for this Keller guy isn't unreasonable considering it that way. - stashu
Keller is 17 and is committed to Boston University where he will play next season most likely. I don't like the idea of not having him for too long if drafted at #8. Maybe a 1 and done but who knows. He seems like a natural center at least in terms of passing and style of play but we don't exactly need another center... they never hurt though. |

Bogo is a perfect example . I never would have picked him. |

Its not about the height - its about the sturdiness. Granted, many of the players you name are not Holstein's either, but all but one is sturdier than Keller. (I know he will grow into his frame - I just don't want to spend a first round draft on a guy I have to wait for. I want much more immediate contribution from a first rounder.) - Der Kaiser
I'm all for it too Kaiser, but whom are we taking at #8 then that plays with us this year. Reinhart even went back to the OHL for a year and there were a ton of people predicting Rochester for him for another year. And he went #2 overall. The development time is no more for Keller than any of these guys at #8, except maybe for Serg, and GMTM isn't taking Serg. |

So as I mentioned, if he stays out of the NHL for 2 seasons, he's STILL only 19 and has had twice as long with some direction from Buffalo as Reinhart did to work on his body. Sounds like a damn good deal if he's overall as good as people are talking about him. |

He plays better at LW than center. Now, maybe we need RWers more right now than LWers; that's a legit argument if true. One of the reason I really like Dubois is he can play either wing or Center. |

The hate is running through me.....
he went to Shattuck St. Mary's too.
Had 14 pts in 7 games at the WJC-18 too.
I can't figure out why the USDP only had him play in the USHL for 23 and then 37 games for in those 2 years.
Tempting.... very tempting. - JVince11

I don't think it's an argument at all... we need more top 6 quality LWers than anything else right now.
I know folks have said that Ennis can play both but right now Kane is our only legit LW.

Can't find it anywhere online... Not doubting you but don't see it...
Even if he did say it could be smokescreen. |

3rd in the draft of the defensman.
12 of 30 picks in the 1st were d-men.

Yeah, hockeydb doesn't track that one, I fell into that hole when people were bragging about Matthews. Forgot where I found the data though. - stashu
Yeah, I am looking at the eliteprospects now.
The USDP teams play a ton of different teams throughout the year. Those point totals are something I would be cautious of. Just because of who they are playing.
The USHL team is the one that I would look at the most. |

Totally agree that the level of competition might not be the same but his total numbers are better than Eichel and Matthews who have played there recently. |
