Agreed. He has been the info geek on them from the start. I find it amusing the way he falls for players like a kid waiting for the sunday toy sale ads at xmas time . - cabin
I've spent a lot of time watching video of the top 15 prospects (long train commute to work will do that). Video's not the end all but, here's what I've seen:
Chychrun - I would not touch - checks most of the boxes, but, his decision making is atrocious. Seems to panick under pressure.
Tkackuk - hard to judge as I could score 50 points playing with Marner, but he was the best player in the OHL playoffs and Mem Cup. I'd have no issue trading up and taking him at #4. His skating isn't as bad as some say
Fin Dman (last name starts with J); elite hockey IQ - never makes a mistake. Not flashy either, reminds me of Pysyk with more offense. I just wish he'd hit somebody once in a while
Serg- my choice if we're taken a Dman. Great hockey IQ, better shot than the other 2 and is a beast at 225 pounds.
Keller - my choice at #8. If you watch even a minute of film on him, he's a step ahead of everyone, speed wise and IQ wise. Still has room to grow, came in at 5'10" at combine. Is two years away. My guess is GMTM does not take him and we will regret it.
Nylander - similar to Keller, a little bigger and not as good. Also, won't go in the dirty areas like Keller will. The most perimeter player I've ever seen on film. Great great shot, great quickness.
Dubois - My 2nd choice at #8 if by some way he fell to us, probably won't. I'd have no problem trading up to #5 to grab him. Big, tough, talented, better skater than Tkachuk. don't assume if GMTM trades up to #4 that it's for Tkachuk, could be for him. |

Do you ever research these things, or is this something you just came up with as a catch phrase one day and stuck with and through repetition it's become fact to you?
I'm not saying there aren't good d-men in the 2nd or later, but I've just gone back and looked at all drafts from 2006-2013 (anything more recent is too small a sample size) and the overwhelming number of better defensemen are in the 1st round - kind of obvious I'd hope...but the way you throw this phrase out there makes me think you are under the impression that top pairing d-men around the league are equally found after the 1st as in the 1st.
For every Subban/Faulk type that you find in the 2nd or later rounds, there are probably 4-5 d-men drafted in the first round that are such safer bets at being the type of d-man to play on a team for a long time and succeed.
Look through these same drafts and count the number of very good or better d-men drafted Round 2 and later and tell me who you come up with and I'll do the work to compare who is found in round 1 and we'll see if it's worth avoiding taking a shot at what should be the better talent. - stashu
There are tons of defenseman that are late round picks in the second round to last
Like I said franchise defenseman's -All-Star defenseman's -solid defenseman
You list PK , Faulk .. I give you Weber , Dustin Buf ,kris letang ,kevin bieksa , Duncan Keith, klingberg ,roman josi , Tyson Barrie, Keith Yandle, TJ Brodie ,vlasic, vatanen, Jake Muzzin, etc
Then you have parayko, gostisehere
That's why I hate drafting defenseman in the top 10
I can guarantee you there are more late round picks in the top 30 then first round picks that are top 10

I know I didn't run into Keith with what I looked through, though some of those other names ring familiar from me seeing them, but since I was looking through 8 of the last 10 drafts, the numbers are skewed less in the direction you seem to think they are.
Scouting has gotten much better and those late round guys aren't sticking out nearly as much as they used to.
As for your "guarantee", I may have to look into that one when I need more time to kill at work. |

I know it sounds completely dumb but drafting a defenseman in the top 10 is like drafting a running back in the first round for me you can get plenty of great ones in the late rounds |

I always look for your opinoin on kids... no doubt about that... but I don't want anything to do with Keller. That was the point of my post. At #8... a 24 and 37 pt USHL seasons is not worth it. Girgensons showed better numbers than that in the USHL.
Sorry... I'm Team... "I'm okay with any DMan or Nylander/DuBois/Tkachuk or trading the pick too" squad? |

I really fail to see the fascination with Keller. How is a 24 and a 37 pt USHL seasons worthy of a top 10 pick???
Any of Juolevi, Chychrun, or Sergechev... or Nylander. if one of the other wingers fall then them too.
I don't want ANYTHING to do with Brown, Keller, Bean, or Jost at #8. - JVince11
He had the second highest point total for the NTDP since Austin Matthews...Thats more than Eichel

Keller 106 points

Worked with Risto for us, but, there's no Risto or Ekblad in this draft. There's elite forwards in this one, and you shouldn't draft a LHD just cuz you need a LHD. Unless we trade up to get Dubois/Tkachuk/Fin Forwards, the player at #8 isn't paling for us until 2018 anyway, and the structure of the team could have totally changes. Get your LHD UFA or trade and draft Keller. GMTM won't draft Keller though |
