It's more surprising because Ward was an UFA -- you lose nothing by letting him walk, and you were paying so much for him that you could get another guy in there, likely an upgrade, and still have money to burn - AllInForFlyers
They needed to expose a goalie with term...so this allows them to protect Lack...fan favorite...still overpaid at 3.3 AAV but its no big deal for them |

What are the odds of a 2nd or 3rd round pick turning into a good 3rd line winger in the NHL? - MJL
2nd round - it could happen
3rd round - it could happen but probably won't |

I wonder if this offseason that plays into players signing.
Like a mid level guy. Would he take less to make sure he is protected? If I am Ward why would I sign this deal knowing it's just to cover Carolina from making Lack exposed.
And if that's the case I want more money knowing my ass could possibly go to Vegas and maybe I don't want to go there.
Just a thought.

Question:
If you're required to protect players with NMCs, but are only allowed to protect 1 goalie, what would happen if you have 2 goalies with NMCs? |

I dont think Vegas would pick Ward at 3.3 with better options on the table, and he really didnt have much leverage cause he walks anyway so in a lot of ways it works for both sides |

No thanks.
It's just a discussion.
I see merits of both sides. Sometimes I feel we overvalue guys on our team. I am not high on Laughton. So for me I don't see it a bad idea to attach him to Umberger to move him and get some picks back.
Yes I know Laughton could maybe develop more. But I don't think his ceiling is that high. I also think with the past few drafts, hextall has found guys that have a higher ceiling and will soon be replacing Laughton.
That's just me. You might not think it but I do respect others opinions. - J35Bacher
im definitely on the opposite view here with Laughton. I think the kid still has more to show, and can definitely be afforded more playing time. I'd actually like to see him on the 2nd pp unit instead of white, white has no business being out there. Laughton plays with an edge, can skate like the wind, and has a very underrated wrister. He's also not the smallest so being a net front, pesky guy on the 2nd unit may be right up his alley. I think his potential can be a top 6 Left winger if he gets concreted as a LW and not shuffled around so much.
also playing with offensively skilled players may help. i wonder how he'd do on Giroux and Simmer's line?

If that GM is still on staff, step one is to fire him. |

I wanted to see him with G/Simmonds or G/Jake last year when he was moved to wing. His underrated wrister may be a nice touch with Jake and G's playmaking abilities. |

Agreed.
Would the NHL just make an exception and/or require the team to keep the one with the highest cap hit? |

I'm sure they'd come up with some cockamamie solution that defied common sense. |

Yeah...its a negotiating tactic to see if he will go to the AHL and it gives teams time to call about Laughton |
