They have a glutton of LW but need Defensive depth... we have Pysyk who doesn't seem to fit. Mersch would still be expansion protected. He potted 24 goals in the AHL last year and 22 the year before. 23 years old. 1 more year at 787K before RFA

Except we have TONS of forward prospects & very few defense prospects
Not that a lot of our forward prospects are top6 types but there's a few & then a bunch that should be NHL players

Basically,
I just don't think we can afford to trade defense for forwards at this point

Teuvo is a softer style player, but 35pts for a 21 year old kid in his first full season isn't a horrible option given the cost. If we end up empty handed coming into this next season this may look a lot more appealing in hind sight.

Agreed on the oilers not getting a kings ransom to trade down a few spots.
Pysyk is probably the caliber of player they could expect at best. That said, they've already got Brandon Davidson, so I'm not sure pysyk really fills a huge need

As far as the forward picks over the last while, easy pachla....
since 2010 there was really only one defender that was a rational pick at the spot they picked, but went with the forward instead.
Murray over yaks. And even then, the guys been a bandaid for most of his first few years and would've made no appreciable difference in their fortunes thus far.
Mayybbee larsson over nuge, but the same can be said about he difference hedve made thus far. Plus, they needed a 1c every bit as bad as a defender at that point.

Guys like trouba and Lindholm really weren't on the radar for those top picks. Hindsight doesn't really work in those cases imo.


Also, they've actually picked 2 defenders in this time frame in the first round. Nurse and klefbom.
