Signing any UFA this summer for more than 1-2 years means protecting them in next years expansion draft.

Not necessarily. IF for some reason we are out of the playoff picture (which a lot us us seem divided on still), the TDL could be used to just get a pick in the next draft. Not disagreeing with you but I think thats why the term is so important. In fact, this years decisions on trades or signings really have be thought through in every scenario to make sure they are right for the team. For example, if Baertschi and Etem are resigned we have a couple players that will have to be left unprotected. It is absolutely critical that Benning either trade players they dont plan to protect by the Draft or TDL or prepare to be razzed about more poor asset management.

Thats why you keep some expendable players till after Exp draft.

I suppose its possible to swap players pre draft with another team that may have a protect-able space at ? position (say wing) with another different protect-able position they need (say defense). Then trade back soon after. THe universe would have to align for such luck but I suppose its possible ....unless theres law regarding that.
