Good signing. Lower than i would have guessed (i was thinking 2+).
Other note, Goligoski rights traded for a 5th rounder to Arz.
What is hammhuis rights worth? |

Thats why you keep some expendable players till after Exp draft.
I suppose its possible to swap players pre draft with another team that may have a protect-able space at ? position (say wing) with another different protect-able position they need (say defense). Then trade back soon after. THe universe would have to align for such luck but I suppose its possible ....unless theres law regarding that. - SMBDragon
Anyone traded in the expansion draft period would not be able to be traded until Jan 1 2018 to eliminate those types of moves
There is expected to be a lot of roster jockeying in the leadup to the anticipated June 2017 draft as teams try to best position themselves for it. The rules dictate that any player traded away during that period can’t be reacquired until after Jan. 1 the following season.

good signing but i can see the logic from both sides. benning gets good value for the next 2 years and it gives him time to see if sven can produce long term before locking him up.
sven, having confidence in his abilities, takes the lower money deal in order to become a ufa in 2 years. he/his agent knows that the cap is stagnant if not deflationary at this point for perhaps a couple years. he's hoping to hit free agency when the cap should be on the rise (or at least if all goes right for him.)
win/win with a bit of risk/risk.
edit: general fanager showing that he's an rfa at the end of this deal. i was under the impression that he would be a ufa. if he's still an rfa, it's an even better deal for the canucks. |

They have Marner, Nylander, and Matthews now. The cup is guaranteed next year - Retinalz
The young guys are great, but of those 3 Matthews is the only one guaranteed to probably make the team. Marner and Nylander might need some and more AHL time.
They have JVR, Kadri, PA and Komarov up front, but after that it gets pretty dicey.
Their D is very suspect. |

I think this is why I feel Hansen is a guy that could be traded. We cannot protect everyone that needs it right now as it stands and thats before any for additions in FA. I agree some guys have value to the team but the ones that do also have more value now then they ever will (ie. Hansen). The TDL is an option but I feel teams are getting smarter about cap allocation at the start of the year to see how they mesh with the team and still have an option to trade them at the TDL themselves. How many guys have been traded at the TDL that are literally useless for the team during the rental period? Some do work out, yes, but not enough for teams to be convinced that rentals are still a viable way to go. Look at Ladd in Chicago. He isnt a bad player but I think he just didnt have enough time to adjust back to that way Chicago plays. I think the time is now due to the expansion draft and waiting until the TDL this year doesnt increase a players value.
I dont dislike Hansen and what he brings to the team but if we need scoring, why hold onto a guy we absolutely know is going to regress next season because of lack of opportunity. |

One expansion team selecting a 23 man roster and some spare parts. I am not worried if they grab Sbisa Vey or Dorsett.

Hope so, Marner is very exciting. But like many young guys coming out of the CHL, making the jump to the NHL is very hard.
I thought Nylander was benched during the Marlies playoff run, for his less than spectacular 2 way play.

Yeah marner cant go to ahl.. so nhl it is. Junior would be silly for him. Nylander was fine, he wasnt producing and his coach called him out for it after a game but hes fine, not worried about him he was great with the Leafs. Leafs d is sketchy next year |

Agreed, but I made a list a while back and we are full before we even get to those guys. Hansen being the 7th before FA's with Gaunce and Etem being 8th and 9th. Sure we could lose em and not feel any sort of loss but I feel thats why the RFA signings are slow going. I could see them moving 1 or two more to make room for a FA to protect.
I didnt even include any of those three on the protected list I made to see what it could look like. |

Alaska Aces are Canucks new ECHL team - VANTEL
How does that work for the players, are all those owned by the canucks now going to play in Alaska instead of Kalamazoo? |

Outside the bandaid signings he started out with, he has really done a great job keeping these young guys humble while maintaining RFA status. Great job with Granlund and Baerstchi. |

Ahh, caught in the too young for the AHL, but too skilled for the CHL. The AHL and NHL need to fix that rule for developmental sake of the players.

Yeah agreed. He has decent height but he doesnt have much weight too him, i seen they have him coming in every day at like 9 to work out and on an eating plan but he is never going to be a 200 pound guy, which is fine though. |

I don't think going back to the CHL is bad if they aren't allowed to play in the AHL. It might have been better if McCann had gone back to jr instead of staying with the Canucks last season... |

Yeah, I'm not sure getting 6 - 9 minutes a night, and not a single shift in the 3rd period does a lot for a young guys development. However being in the locker room and practicing with those guys does teach them alot. |
