Alex Killorn anyone? He strikes me as a good replacement for Kunitz. He Can play In the dirty areas.

Is Grabner top 6 material? Can he be as good as Hagelin? How about Frolik? Boedker? If so, another good option.

Bonino's gonna merit a 4 mil AAV contract if the HBK line continues to do its thing. I don't want Bonino at that price tag if I'm being completely honest with myself and Bones has become a favorite of mine. I think Bones, Hornqvist, Fehr, and Cole should all be allowed to walk at the end of their contracts. Probably Hagelin too. Seeing how the post '09 Shero era ended up I have become extremely cautious of being loyal to non-core players. Crosby, Malkin, and Letang are the only guys we should be giving the benefit of the doubt to. Kessel, Murray, Maatta, and Dumoulin are the next teir. Everyone else is expendable.

If HBK is doing it's thing, then what is wrong with paying $4 mil for that kind of production?

$4 would be a discount. We have to spend money somewhere and he's as good an option as anyone. If a guy can still contribute for his contract then sign him. I'm concerned he will get $6 million.

Fwiw Kunitz/dupuis/scuderi were a good bit older when they signed with us. A 4 year deal on bonino I believe would be his 29-33 years. Kunitz dupuis scuderi were like 33-38 years. No one complains with the production we got from those guys for their early 30's

I've noted that too. But actually spending that money might get tough. For one while dupuis/malkin come off the cap ownership still has to pay them so budget wide might not want to spend.
- sditulli

Teams that are contenders typically budget 4-6 playoff games into the yearly budget. Spending LTIR money is basically an investment in wanting more playoff home games, thus winning, and making out in the end.

After just winning the Cup, I HIGHLY doubt they'd not spend LTIR should Malkin be out half the season.

I don't see how we can get Killer, but yes he is a good player. Grabner would be a good flyer to take if he comes on a Comeau/Cullen deal. I have no interest in Frolik. His cap hit's too big for what he brings and hi term is too long to feel comfortable with that, and furthermore he's a RW which we just don't need. Boedker is probably a near perfect fit, but he'll be too expensive as a UFA.

Because we have other people to worry about in the future. Whether or not Nick Bonino fits under the cap the year he is extended isn't the question. Whether or not Nick Bonino fits under the cap when Sprong, the WB5, and any other player that may come around are up for extensions as well is the question. We were loyal to non-core players after 09 like Kunitz, Dupuis, and Scuderi and look at how that turned out. Chicago was loyal to Bickle and look at how that turned out. LA was loyal to Dustin Brown and look at how that turned out.

OK. The cap isn't dropping further. NHL is expanding. Quit worrying about hypotheticals about players that have a combined 50 career points between them.

No I'm not going to stop worrying about them. Lack of foresight (frank)s teams all the time and it (frank)ed us in particular after 09. I want a dynasty.

So do I. I think signing Bones helps us keep the three scoring line model intact while Sid and Geno are still at their peak- ish. We obviously disagree about how to go about it. I don't think signing Bones at $4 is irresponsible is all I'm saying.
Edit: Also these tough decisions are a year away. We'll know what is the proper way to go by then for the most part anyways.

Hate the Fleury deal for Frolik. I was a fan to sign him a year ago thinking his price tag wouldn't be that steep. You don't save much in that deal and Frolik is an enigma.

I don't think you get the #35 pick and a B list prospect for MAF. It's the 35 pick and nothing else.

Brought up Kylington's name a while ago. I'm a fan. I'm a fan of Calgary sending the 66th pick and Oliver to us for MAF. Kylington would greatly help our shortage of blue liner depth in this organization. Funny thing I never thought I'd ever say that considering how many Dmen we drafted under Shero.

Thinking Calgary would be more apt to give us the 53 and 55th picks instead of giving up Kylington and that would be fine.

- Oneonta Penguin

Is Kylington much of an upgrade over Pouliot, Prow, or Bengtsson as a prospect? I'd be happy with that return just curious as he's another smallish, offensive oriented defenseman and would need to pass those guys to be of any value.

I still prefer a LW in a perfect world. At least in the short term, I think LW is a more pressing need and think we're overdue for a young blue chip winger for the top 6. Still not comfortable with Kunitz, Sheary, Rust as our top 6 LW options (assuming we keep HBK in tact).

Of course, the deal would have to be done soon in order to get that. I wonder if Pittsburgh did have four seconds, if it would move some of those picks to go up instead of using all four. First thing is first, trade MAF.
- Oneonta Penguin

Crazy to think we don't have any 3rd after we had our own third, plus the 3rds from Shero and Byslma.

No way JR is retiring, he's likely already working the phones and too busy to think about retiring.

If DP is here in 2016-17, he had better show something in a hurry. If he doesn't, it will be the last season as a Penguin. He is a RFA after next year in a year in which Murray and Dumo would have to be resigned to deals. DP would be the odd man out with another year like this one. Kid needs to get off his ass and work hard. He hasn't shown me anything to suggest he is top four material.
- Oneonta Penguin

I'm leaning towards trading him. I think he can still be a good defenseman in due time. But there's still a 40% chance of bust, imo. Trade him while he still has value. Usually gauge busts on how many glimpses you see of elite play. I became a believe in him after the Sharks game in 2014....but that was his only truly noticeable game. Which scares me.

Bones' comment to Sullivan in the All Access show cracked me up. Plus, his Kessel bit at the parade. Plus his story about Phil skipping out on the Colbert show. Bones is really becoming a favorite of mine off the ice haha.

Yep. That was my favorite part of episode. 2nd fave was when Sully was talking bout how he had a feeling Pens would win game 6. Great show.

Definitely. Chills man. Love Sullivan.

I listen to DeBoer speak in the room and think "this tool used to get spanked by his parents for saying the F word"

I listen to Sullivan and want to lace em up and run through a wall for him.

I wish Shotime did a little better with the intricacies of the series like the crowd turnout for Game 5, Cullens broken toe, Bonino's infected eblow and being quarantined, the Punjabi guys, etc. But I still enjoyed all the episodes.

What happened to 'In the Room' done by the Penguins? They just stopped coming out with episodes. Kind of pissed me off. I enjoyed watching that.

Since its late at night...some more random trade thoughts based around Pouliot

Kunitz and Pouliot for Kreider

Pouliot straight up for Nuke

I'd take either of these trades in a heartbeat, which means there is no chance in hell either deal gets done. I think as things stand right now, Nichushkin is on less of a bust watch than Pouliot, and if my memory serves me correctly, I think the Stars have a good amount of LD prospects.

The Rangers may be forced to move Kreider due to cap issues, but they'll get much better offers than an expiring contract and a B+ prospect.

Sullivan is obviously a GREAT leader. He takes mundane(sp?) questions in a presser and turns them into detailed answers that everybody can relate to. His passion jumps out and it's easy to see why the boys play the way they do. He inspires everybody.

Dont know Dallas' farm system very well, just figuring with Goligoski leaving and Oduya at age 34 they might be interested. Probably need a sweetener.

Kreider, you're probably right. A guy I would love to have - no idea on his cost. He's an RFA I believe (like Zucker who I mentioned earlier) RFA stuff gets complicated.

Scuderi turned into Daley and he and Kunitz helped the team win the cup. I'd say it turned out all right

Still we are not s huge market and it's our first playoff run in years. Also I believe LTIR money is capped at 7.3 million (10% of cap). Malkin should add a little cap room but not sure we would spend all of his LTIR money

Pouliot already isn't a bust. All his stats indicate NHL defenseman. If he was on a team that actually played him he's a league average 3rd pairing guy with potential to be a mid-pairing guy.

I guess I would trade him because I'm not confident this coaching staff will get him to his potential

Sully had him in both leagues this season. So if he is leaving him out of the loop after preseason (if he's still here), then something is definitely wrong & they should trade him rather than try & punish him (given if that is what they would try & do - teach him a lesson?? ). Sully got these other guys up & they just helped win Stanley, surely he can do it for the Poul boy??
