Isn't Murray a RFA the next 3 years? So I don't think he will get 4 mil a year.
- Thorny

He is an RFA until 26. I love MAF but if a trade is there that will help with the cap and a draft pick/prospect GMJR will take it. Also wasn't it just last year that Murray and Zatkoff split the best goaltender award in the AHL? Wouldn't hate trying that duo at this level but I know most on here won't agree with me.

Very excited for the draft. If pens can move flower for a top 15 pick there is a chance they can a decent LW. The top 10 LW are all over 6'0" and have great things written about then

I don't think it would happen for Flower alone but that would be amazing if it did!

If we threw in our 2nd... that sounds a bit less silly.

Agree, the cap savings is only mostly useful for this one year. But also, Kunitz and a few others will be off the books by next season. Is there a UFA out there sub 3.75M (the net savings from trading Fleury and then signing veteran backup) to make it worth making the move now?
- YouMeAndDupuis9

Kunitz comes off after next year but Murray dumoulin pouliot are off elc and Daley/bonino are Ufa. That year we will have some tough decisions.

What about the possibility of us trading flower and Murray being lights out next year and another team offer sheeting him to 6-7mil. Could this happen?

would be a pretty good draft pick compensation coming back for a goalie at least.

If it did happen we'd have to match or be left without a starter. We could always decline and take the assets and sign another goalie I guess.

In that range we would certainly match. It's only 1st, 2nd , 3rd compensation. Doubtful a lottery pick team would target a goalie. An offer sheet over 7 would be the area we would consider not matching. Offer sheet is possible but fairly unlikely. Though the need to pay Murray next year is the main reason I want nothing to do with a Dallas deal and taking on a niemi contract. I don't want 8 million tied up in the goalie position which is more than what fleury costs.

After next year Kunitz is off the books and scuderi retention. We should be able to bring everyone back except potentially bonino who is likely to get good 3c money and potentially 2c money. I'm guessing he will be paid like soderberg or anisimov but potentially a bit more.

Next years goalie mkt could be a tough one. Part of the reason I'm ok keeping fleury this year. Buffalo and toronto could enter the goalie mkt before the expansion draft. Expansion team is like to select 3 quality goalies who fit into low end starters or top back ups.

I think that's what worries me most. Hopefully if they do offload fleury they don't take back any large un moveable salaries. Regardless what happens next year, we're gonna have to pay Murray more when it's over.

I could tea back the wiseman salary from Calgary. It's only for one year if it boosts return. We could also retain on wideman and move him somewhere else. But having a bad cap charge for two years could present a problem.

Im not too familiar with their Dmen outside Suter....who would the Pens even want back? I see the need for Malkin, but not sure who would come back....maybe Granlund?

Its an EK rumor... you're supposed to laugh and nothing else. Wild are as tight to the cap as us.

if someone plunked down 7 mil on murray, i dont even consider matching.

maybe jarry becomes something in a few years. even still. i wouldnt put that much into any goalie based upon how this team is constructed. nothing against murray, i just dont believe in team construction that way.

and that would be a pretty big haul of picks considering no one really moves that much for goalies, so it wouldnt be that bad of a return. id still be shocked if it was that high of an offer sheet.

Your biases are fairly clear. Or you wouldn't compare a goalie who played 20 games to a guy who played one game.

I like fleury. I like Murray. Personally think fleury could have 5-7 good years in him still. With Murray's AHL performance combined with his nhl performance he's pretty much as proven of a guy you can get in this league.

- sditulli

I love how people claim I'm bias and bending perception but then point to things I never did or said as their defense, when did I ever compare Murray's numbers to someone who played 1 game? I used a sample size of 3 games or more (which is the same as several sites I checked), he would have actually been 9th if I included goalies who only played 1 game. There has to be some sort of perimeters set to compare numbers and since not all teams played more than 1 series I think using half a series as the cutoff is more than far.

Also his AHL numbers are all but irrelevant, the list of players who have excelled at the AHL level but never succeeded at the NHL level is pretty damn long and 34 games against NHL competition isn't nearly enough to prove anything, it took 20 of those games before people started figuring out he struggled high glove and with guys coming from around the net, how he fares over 60-65 games of everyone attacking the weakness they've now found will prove what he will become. Hopefully for the Pens sake he's able to adjust now ghat the league has adjust to him and he becomes the elite goalie many believe he will be.

Except for the fact that they aren't getting a top 15 pick for Fleury that sounds great.

To get a decent return would have to be over 7.5. Getting only a 1st, 2nd, 3rd for Murray would be very bad asset management.

Coming from someone who gets proven wrong at almost every turn.
- jaydogg1974

Yeah Murray is what 24-8-1 but he's lost more games than he's won for the team. And I have been out on a limb all by myself and right enough times that what you say matters not even the slightest to me.

100% incorrect. 1way and 2way contracts are a financial determination that lays out how players will be paid at each level, 1way only means he gets paid his full salary while in the AHL if sent down. Waiver eligibility is determined by age, service time and number of games played, for Wilson at age 24 the waiver exemption is 60 NHL games and 2 years since singing his NHL contract.
- jaydogg1974

He has to go through waivers now so he can't just go up and down and if he's getting paid to be on the NHL roster he's not going to be playing in the AHL. But we ll see where he is at the beginning of the season since I'm always wrong I'm sure he ll be one WHS(and yes that is sarcasm)

3rd in both GAA and SV%

Sounds like top tier to me... but then, I just have the ability to read.

extra note... what teams did he face? Oh, only the top two teams in the east for goals per game (excluding us) and the top of the playoffs and the west, in San Jose.

Rangers were a stat boost... won't even pretend they were tough on him.

This guys is just obsessed with trying to make Murray out as some Johnny come lately when he's succeeded at every level and improved year in and year out. Murray makes it look easier than it is because he's so calm but he's always playing the right angles and always playing the right position. Yes he has work to do but he's also a lot further ahead than most goalies are at his age and experience level. And the Penguins playing "flawless hockey" narative he keeps repeating is pure BS, they did play well no question but far from flawless. Murray was what he had to be. MAF just hasn't been, you can argue the team in front of him wasn't always as good but not always.

The Murray RFA situation after next season is going to be interesting because I'm not sure there really has ever been a comparable situation to have set a comparable as we've seen with most players, the closest I can think is maybe Tuukka Rask but he was still just the backup through his RFA years and was only playing around 30 games per year, the year he became the starter was the year he signed the 8y-56M contract. It could lead to some tough negotiations trying to set a value with no previous contracts to compare to.
