As another note, let's see what Johnny and Moni sign for first before we come to some crazy conclusions that we need to worry that much about cap space.
Bollig, Wideman, Smid, and Engelland all come off the cap after next year.
Plus, apparently ths $73 mil cap might be a thing now, too. |

I think moving forward Calllahan is going to drop off a lot more than Frolik. He is 3 years older and has some tough miles on him. Also, he has already seen a pretty big decline recently. This is why I think it's a good deal for Tampa. - RonPielep
Yes. I would be very unhappy if the deal went down this way. That has the makings of a contract almost as bad as Brown is he regresses further this year. |

That's not the point. If Winnipeg wants Bishop, TBL would have to take pavs as part of the trade. For that to happen Winnipeg would have to include some major pieces. That's not realistic. For Winnipeg to get involved they would have to buy him or first, which could happen, but hasn't. - dr_soiledpants
No they wouldn't. Winnipeg could buy him out afterwards....
Did you see Phaneuf being traded to the Sens last season?
Did the Penguins with their lack of cap space seem like a fit for Kessel?
Why is Calgary the only destination for Bishop ? |
|
|
|
The main purpose is the expansion draft. The second purpose is cap space after this season, which they absolutely will need. Are Schultz and Lovejoy why they need huge swaths of cap space this year? - FLflames34
For this year I think the flexibility would be the biggest benefit. If they become plagued with injuries they can make some depth moves, or allows them to be significant buyers at the tdl. |

For the money i think MAF is a better option.
Bishop might be better but more costly & gets niggly injuries all the time. |

Pav's deal is up after this season and he hasn't exactly been lights out. Think they'll want to just extend him?
Maybe they'll trade him to Calgary so they can act on Bishop.
See how that works? - golfingsince
Ignoring the fact that they just extended Hutchison and have hellebuyck waiting in the wings... They already have a 3 headed monster a la 2015 Flames spooling up.
The Flames are not in the market for a crap goalie, and if you are arguing that there are a plethora of other teams out there who can both dump an existing goalie and have the prospect/pick leverage to acquire a Bishop, you're nuts.
The goalie market, according to basically EVERYONE is thin this summer, few teams have the cap space or the need for a Bishop/Fleury.
Are the Flames the only team in the running? Probably not. Are they one of the few with the cap space, the prospect pool and the depth of picks in this draft to get something done? Yup. |

Did you see the garbage Toronto had to take back to get that Phaneuf deal done? TBay has no cap space if they are going after Stamkos, so you can't send crappy contracts back the other way.
Kessel was in the same boat, apart from picks, Toronto receive a bunch of marginal (at best) players in return to balance the salary. Toronto needed to fill up their cap space knowing they were tanking last year, Tampa does not have the luxury of accepting cap space in return in any trade. |

So Bob Mackenzie tweets that the Flames may or may not, could have or will, woulda, coulda and shoulda talked to Tampa about Bishop and we all have our panties in a knot? Meh, this is negotiating 101... Rutherford says a first, BT tells him to pound sand. Rutherford says I know you want him, BT say Bishop... blah, blah, blah...
Everyone knows the Flames need a tendie so we don't start from a position of power... But sorry MAF nor Bishop get the #6... |

Only risk with bishop is that he can haul ass out of there next year if he's doesn't like it. At least with fleury, you're guaranteed that he'll stay for a few years |

JR has stated he'd like to keep both... Not sure the numbers will align properly for either. Pouliot can replace Schultz hopefully... Lovejoy isn't really required... he "should" be 7th in the Pens depth with Schultz staying/Pouliot finally ready to play. But if for some reason, he'd stay 3 years at 1.7 mil or less, I'd jump on it INSTANTLY. Realistically, some team will throw 3 years at near 3 mil a year at him, he did earn it.
However... if Malkin requires TJ surgery... that is another 3-4 mil in cap space via 1/3-1/2 of the season in LTIR. |

Relying on LTIR for cap-space is creeping into the Oilers level of team management... |

Hahaha the poor Coilers......
I'm all for the Flames getting Bishop as long as I don't hear the words: Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Brodie, Hamilton or the number 6! - The-O-G

That is a great start, but I think Calgary needs to add another of their 2nd rd picks to make it work. GMJR and all. |
