Laberge is high upside pick. Risk/reward, tons of skill. 1st round talent at 36.

Carter Hart: arguably best goalie prospect in draft. Great value.

I'm not as sour on Wade Allison now tbh. I overlooked him because Black Book had hockey sense questions, but he absolutely has size, skating, toughness, and skill. Far far worse they could do looking for a PWF winger than him.

I don't understand why they went with 2 forwards with two-way ability in the 2nd round after taking Rubstov in the 1st. I like the Rubstov move but do NOT understand these two picks. Hopefully we are proven wrong. I'm good with the G as he was the 1st ranked G by Button and to get him in the mid 2nd seems like good value to me. I wanted DeBrincat and Abramov for that swing for the fences pure goal scorer. Time will tell though.

Director of NHL Central Scouting Dan Marr:
"Laberge is a high-skilled forward with good hockey sense. He's a strong skater with an extra gear to pull away with the puck. He has soft hands and good vision to make plays and finish scoring chances."

I really don't see how we needed another goalie prospect right now to take one that high. Not thrilled with the pick. Kid must have big time upside though.

Laberge is not a 2-way forward. He was moved from center because he struggled defensively. Allison is a PWF. Doesn't mean he can't play good defense, but I wouldn't call him a 2-way guy.

Laberge was the 2nd overall pick in the 2014 QMJHL Draft by the Gatineau Olympiques. He only played for half the year with them before he was dealt to Victoriaville. That trade reunited him with his Midget AAA coach Bruce Richardson, with whom he went all the way to the Telus Cup final in 2013-2014 with the Grenadiers de Châteauguay.

It took until December this season to see Laberge to start playing some great hockey, the kind that you expect from a top prospect. At that time, he started playing on the wing full-time, which seemed to click for him offensively, with less responsibility and more freedom to create offense. He went on a great run in December before breaking a bone in his hand, but made it back for the Top Prospects’ Game where he was named MVP, playing great alongside fellow Quebecer Pierre-Luc Dubois. Overall this season, Laberge had 45 of his 68 points after December 1st, showing great progression through the season. The St-Martine native skates well and is a good scorer. We like his scoring potential more, even if he had a lot of assists this season. He has a good shot and can score from anywhere in the offensive zone, but his decision-making will need to improve. He has great puck skills, great one-on-one moves and can make defenders playing the puck instead of the man regret that decision.

Physically, he will need to get bigger and stronger, as he is not a physical player and doesn’t win enough one-on-one battles. Laberge is an exciting player on the ice with his speed and hands that grant him the ability to make highlight-reel plays, but he’s still searching for that consistency that could make him an elite player. He’s not involved in the play enough; in some viewings he barely touched the puck and was on the perimeter too often. At this level, he still can get by, due to his superior skill level. But once he reaches the pros, this tendency could hurt him. Another area he will need to improve on is his defensive game. Moving him to the wing was a way of giving him less defensive responsibilities compared to a center. He still needs to be more focused in the defensive zone, leaning towards making the smart play instead of cheating to go on offense. Laberge progressed well this year; after a tough rookie season and an up-and-down first half he took a major step from December onwards and was one of the top players in the league in this portion. He has areas in his game that he needs to improve on, but you can’t deny his offensive upside and skill level. At the U-18s, he scored twice on the power play in the tournament but his decision-making and complete game was lacking.

Black Book is way further down on Laberge than most other sites though. So, that report isn't the consensus.

They do agree though, he absolutely oozes skill and offensive potential.

Laberge has high end skill. It's the other stuff that's a work in progress. Even Allison has a lot of skill for a PWF. He's no lug. The hockey sense knocks are what concern me.

I'll say this though, both have sniping ability.

Carsen is a big bodied kid that has very underrated skating ability. He is a strong powerful skater with a long reach that likes to throw his body around. He also prides himself on being first to the puck and if not will do whatever it takes to win possession for his team. He is relentless on the forecheck and creates space and scoring chances for his line mates with his physical play. Carsen brings high energy when he is on the ice and he competes in all three zones. Carsen will sacrifice his body to make a play and help his team gain momentum. He leads by example and blocks shots and will do
whatever it takes to help his team win. Along with all these intangibles he also can shoot the puck. He possesses the ability to use different types of shots and can get his shot off quickly. He has shown a lot of growth in the offensive side of his game from his rookie season and looks to continue to develop this area of his game.

He did not have huge offensive numbers, but consistently brought the effort and compete level that is required to be successful. He projects as a solid bottom six forward

This one is really meh for a 3rd rounder at #82. Now this is a size, low ceiling pick.

Flyers need to start gambling on ceilings with later picks. There are a lot of high potential, risk/reward players lurking about.

Not a fan of the goalie thing either. Not against taking goalies in the second round, but they have strong depth and history shows that taking goalies in the 3rd-5th round is normally the best way to maximize draft picks.
