Missing the point of the discussion and why there are loopholes found and executed by teams. It's about how you get to the 50/50 split. If the cap was better designed, and implemented, there wouldn't have been the extremes in the past of players getting 10M salaries with cap hits half that, there wouldn't be the high escrow percentages that players don't like. There wouldn't be new rules that need to be put in place, limiting contract structure, or a rule to retroactively punish teams for contract structure put in place, for contracts that were approved under the rules of the previous CBA, and there probably wouldn't have been a lockout the last time. Some things you can't predict such as the fall of the Canadian dollar, but overall, it's very much a work in progress. if the league can limit player contract structure because they want cap hit to match salary, then the players can look at the opposite, and say the same, with the extent to what a team like Arizona is doing. - MJL
Explain to me how someone isn't getting paid because of Datsyuk's empty contract? |

Slew of teams not sending qualifying offers to guys, supposedly to avoid arbitration.
Boston didn't qualify Brett Connolly. NJ failed to qualify Beau Bennett, Jon Merrill & Devante Smith-Pelley. Calgary didn't qualify Joe Colborne or Joni Ortio.
Seems to me they are overthinking things, unless they have a handshake deal with these guys. If I didn't get qualified, I'd sure as poop test UFA waters. |

Arizona would have to sign players worth 7.5M in cap hits if they didn't have the dead cap space for Datsyuk. Why did Arizona acquire Datsyuk in the first place? Why is there a cap floor?

Because the other team (frank)ed up and Arizona had space to acquire an asset at the cost of something they weren't going to use anyway? |

Some surprises there for sure. It hurts the team's leverage in negotiations big time. |

Ducks didn't qualify Brandon Pirri...there's some fairly attractive UFAs out there. |

So that 7.5 million dollars wouldn't have been spent in Detroit if it had stayed there. Now Detroit will spend that 7.5 million on players/player.
The players are still getting the 7.5 just from someone else who couldn't spend it before the trade.
The other questions have already been answered/are self explanatory. |

No matter what, there are mechanisms in place to ensure the 50/50 split, it's just a question of how the money is divided among the players. The reason for the cap floor is to ensure that each team spends a certain amount. Just as the league had a problem with salary paid out, exceeding cap hits paid out, so should the players for cap hits paid out, exceeding salary paid out. No matter what Detroit spends, there is still going to be 11M in cap hits paid, that counts towards the players share, without the salary paid out behind it.

Yeah, but his team traded him. These other guys were just handed UFA status.
Maybe I'm wrong, but if I'm getting a shot at UFA status 2-3 years early, I'm going to test the waters. |

Reminds me of the talk of not being able to trade Lecavalier, which I was one of who believed that. Read can be traded, although his value is limited. His value could be increased by the Flyers retaining salary.

I hope he goes to Pittsburgh so their guy can slaughter his goal announcement so racially bad that they have to fire him.
