I will admit I was being a little over the top when I said I wouldn't trade Doughty for Hall. I might not, but it clearly isn't a ridiculous idea. I just exaggerated to make a point and it got a little out of control.
- James_Tanner

The point(s) should be that 1) Hall is one of the best LW in the game right now and Doughty is one of the best D in the game right now. 2) Edmonton has too many top tier forwards to fill their roster and no where near enough top end D. And 3) you make a trade to make your TEAM better, not based on who is a better player at their respective position.
Therefore, if EDM had the chance to make that trade and didn't, they would be the biggest idiots around.
Doughty leading their D instantly puts them somewhere close to the status you've been telling us they are already at for months (and months) now. Even without everything that Hall brings to the rink.
And for the record, Bourque was the better Defenseman. But, man alive, was Coffey fun to watch.

No, I don't think it's really close either. I would way rather have the two-way game of Taylor Hall. Also, I think Hall doubles as a decent human, so there's that.

Biggest tool on hockey buzz folks! jammmmmmmes tannnnner

Tanner, your love for Hall is so bias that you're throwing the "good human" card around. KANE WAS NEVER PROVEN GUILTY!!!!

Halls two way game? It's nothing special. If anything, at least Kane doesn't disappear for huge stretches of the season. Hall was very inconsistent this season and displayed no proof of being this second best winger you speak of. You seriously think Hall is a better winger than Benn or Seguin? Putting hall in your top 10 is fair but top 2? Good grief. Sounds like you cuddle with his jock strap at night.

I think we can all agree that you don't give away hall.

To suggest that Doughty for Hall is in any way a bad deal is completely ridiculous. I bet Chiarelli and every other GM would trade Hall for Doughty every day.

Bourque, who had 4 90 point seasons. But advanced stats weren't around to colour my opinion back then so I don't know who is actually better.

Plus, if Bourque scored 90 points on Boston, would he maybe not have outscored Coffey if he played with Gretzky etc.

- James_Tanner

without advanced stats you'd have no opinion because at the end of the day you don't know what you're talking about.

There aren't any trades happening right now because all of the GMs are on a conference call laughing that 1) Hall is the 2nd best winger in the NHL and 2) Doughty for Hall straight up is 'ridiculous.'

Sooo if Hall for EK is the only fair D trade for him, then how much should the Coyotes GM add if we offer him for OEL + ?

Legit question given previous comments re OEL

I don't. I would not trade Hall for Doughty. Also, Hall played all 82 games last year and Doughty scored at a lower rate than Dan Giardi.
- James_Tanner

But I thought we weren't valuing players based on points?

So what I'm getting from the series of Tanner blogs recently is this:

There is no amount of good defensive play that can make up for Karlsson scoring 31 more points than Doughty, and Karlsson is the superior player by a wide margin.

Kane is far worse than Hall, despite scoring 41 more points than him, because Hall has superior defensive play.

I find that laughable. Don't you consider defensive ability in your rankings? Did you even look anything up, or just go by total points? Don't answer that, we both know the answer.
- James_Tanner

If he went by total points then why is Ovie 1?

D are far more valuable than wingers...that is why the Oilers can't get any and that is why they continue to suck

Anyone who wouldn't trade Hall for DD is gonna be really disappointed with the actual return

Yakupov has no real trade value, so might as well put him next to McDavid and let him score 40 goals.

I don't see why they even have to trade a forward. If they sign Lucic, they have the best forward group ever assembled in NHL history and that isn't a joke or an exaggeration.

Hall- RNH - Eberle
Lucic - McDavid - Yakupov
Pujar..not even gonna try that one yet - Draisatil - Pouliot

I mean, that is a terrifying linup.

Why not trade Nurse (lots of potential, but pretty lousy so far) and a couple firsts for Shattenkirk or whoever you need? Then sign Zack Redmond and Jason Demers as UFAs and you have a really good D when you add in Klefbom, Sekara and Davidson.

You're being very reasonable. I rank Hall over Benn because he's two years younger. But if you want to go with Benn, it's Pavement/Radiohead distinction.
- James_Tanner

I understand saying that a player who is younger would have more trade value or maybe will be better. But you were saying Hall is better flat out.

Doughty is pretty overrated, there are lots of better defenseman. I wouldn't trade Hall for Doughty. Hall will help you win more games. Nice appeal to the masses though, great argument strategy.
