I mean we also got Bogo in the deal so you have to take that into consideration as well. Pittsburgh gave a two prospects and a 1st for Kessel and that albatross contract. The overpayment paid off though

Then they still have to sign zemgus, foligno, McCabe, lets average them out and say 2m each. Then they have to sign kasdorf, and bring in a backup goalie. All of a sudden they are at or over the cap. Everyone is kidding themselves if they think the Sabres have all this cap room without trading away a contract or two if they want to sign anyone else. I have no idea how they were planning on paying stamkos 12m.
