Is there any ufas left that can be signed for around a mil that are under 28, have speed and skill that can help the pens? Bc most of them were signed yesterday... - nh4442
Sheary, Rust, Kuhn, and Wilson. They are already signed for under a mill. Wilson hopefully takes Sheary off the first line. I would also like to see Kuhn get a shot at moving up. He has better finishing abilities than Rust and sheary, he just also has better hockey IQ, defensive IQ, shot blocking and PK IQ. He just fit perfectly with Cullen on the fourth line. |

no. just realise we can't and won't get any new players this offseason - martox
Still have a shot on Schultz. I haven't heard anything on his market but doesn't sound like anyone is targeting him hard. Maybe he comes in under 2
And we will likely do a Cullen style signing. 1 million or less veteran who has good analytic but no one is targeting because he's old. This signing might just be cullen if he signs with us because I don't see a need to add 2 wingers.
I love having forward depth so any guy whose NHL quality i would sign and push younger guys back to AHL. We will have injuries.
Long shot on vesey. Maybe we should have ponied up to get his rights. I guess he's talking to buffalo now |

Is it just me or do these Vesey type deals never live up to the hype anyway. Look at Hayes in New York. He aint bad but he's def not worth all the hype that surrounded him. |

Panarin was the only super hyper special case Ufa last year....though from Russian route and not college. I'd say he lived up to the hype.
It should be really rare to find a 4 year college players that is a true game breaker as those types don't stay 4 years. My guess vesey ends up being a good mid-6 forward with potential to be very good second line guy.
I would love to add that. More depth at cheap costs. |

that is not why people want him. he won the hoby baker award just as johny hockey did. vesey has had the same path as johny so people believe that whoever gets vesey gets a player just as good as johny hockey. so you can understand why he is hyped. but I agree with you that these kinds of deals doesn't always work out |

It's important to remember that Kevin Porter also won the Hobey Baker and Johnny Hockey was a one and doner I'm pretty sure.
The appeal to guys like Vesey and Hayes isn't necessarily boom or bust star power like a Panarin or a Pesonin. It's an opportunity to sign a super young player on ELC that is so incredibly close to a sure thing without having to spend any assets.
EDIT: Johnny Hockey was a three year guy not a one and doner. Either way, Legit NHL talents rarely make it to their senior year. |

Tep vesey is close to a sure thing NHL player. Should have a floor as a good 3rd line guy. Some prospect rankings place as potential 1st line guy but that's the question mark. He's literally free to sign Ufa and that's the benefit. |

Eh. We addressed our defensive depth issues. I think there's plenty of options for 7th D and injury call ups now with the guys we signed today. Not gonna worry about marginal improvements. - Victoro311
The best part about how GMJR addressed the defensive depth chart is that he gave the organization enough options that even if they loose a guy to waivers like they did with Warsofsky last year, they'll still be in really good shape and have plenty more options. I would assume that if they all play well enough to be the 7th D on the NHL roster that at least 1 or 2 of them will be claimed at somepoint during the season, unless of course we get lucky enough that all 6 of our regulars play 82 games.

Not really many young guys they can send to the AHL without risking losing them to waivers, out of the young guys currently on the NHL roster only Sundqvist & Wilson are waiver exempt. The no chance they could send Rust, Sheary or Kuhnlackl down because all 3 would surely be lost to a waiver claim. So that really limits your options to just 1 spot if you assume a Cullen signing that would already have pushed Sundqvist down.

Still don't see how a Shultz signing makes sense for the player or for the team, they showed this past season that they have no interest or trust in a Shultz/Pouliot 3rd pairing so by signing Shultz they would again be looking at a Shultz vs Pouliot situation for the #6 spot. This makes no sense for the Pens because they need to see what they have in Pouliot and have already made it clear they are going to give him that shot to prove he can stick in the NHL so it makes no sense for Shultz to sign here just to sit in the pressbox and wait for Pouliot to either boom or bust. It's precisely why they haven't even entertained the idea and won't entertain the idea of bringing Shultz back.

I hope you are right, but I'd guess it's more likely that he's a secondary target for the teams trying to get Demers or Russell and is waiting for the market to clear. |

ruth has even said he is trying to bring schultz back but I agree that schultz isn't NEEDED but what if pouliot fails? would you want warsofsky to be our 6th d man? if someone got hurt would you want warsofsky as your 6th d man? |

I think it makes sense for the Penguins to sign Schultz. Depth is depth. Most likely scenario is we spend 40-50 games next year with one of our top 6 hurt. I also think Sullivan should rotate guys into the lineup more often. During the playoffs go with your top 6 but during the regular season you could get all 7 in frequently.
I consider Schultz and pouliot very similar assets. I think they have similar ceilings. Schultz probably has a lower floor. |

Personally, I'd be willing to send Pouliot back to the minors if they could keep Schultz. I haven't given up on Pouliot and do not mind letting him start here, but I think Schultz has more upside and is a righty. Might even be able to replace Daley next year after a full year in our system. He's a better fit with Cole and still just 25. |

So I was thinking on Vesey a bit this morning and a thought occurred to me. Two thoughts actually.
Any team that wants him in the NHL club, will have to keep cap space open for him until Aug 15th. Well, that may kind of show your hand for the number of teams who are tight on the cap.
But then I realized, since we have part of Duper's LTIR that won't kick in till after a certain date, we would sign him, send down Sheary (temporarily) for that space. So we're all good to be grinding on the cap! |

Sheary isn't waiver exempt. Wilson, Sund, and Pouliot can be sent down. |

So the D is:
Letang-Maata
Dumo-Daley
Cole-DP/Warf, maybe Shultz
Id try to keep Shultz. Warf sucks, DP hasn't shown anything yet, Cole was not good most of the regular season, Daley will be gone after this year, and Maata was struggling a lot in the playoffs.....Shultz was decent in his time up. |

If Rutherford said he's trying to bring Shultz back that'snews to me. Pretty sure it was either Yohe or DK that reported they've had no contact with Shultz of any kind and don't plan to.
I get the point about insurance against Poulliot failing but why would Shultz want to sign here to sit in the press box and only play if there's an injury or Pouliot fails.

Could have sworn someone said Sheary was... but doesn't really matter. Wilson then, or Sund... point was we had players to send down for a week or however long it is to make Vesey fit. |

I think if schultz signs here he will have a bigger role. he was good at the power play and we desperately need a right handed defensemen. |

Sheary would have to clear waivers to be sent down and I highly doubt he would make it through, somebody would scoop him up. Also being that Vesey can only sign an elc not much space will be needed to add him to any team and technically a team like the Pens could sign him, then just do a paper move the day before the season starts to make it work with the cap. Money won't be an issue for any team in trying to sign Vesey.

Schultz being signed I think is an indicator they want him to replace Daley for the follow seasons.
Apparently Daley is very bad at preventing shots when we pulled up his charts a few days ago... so Schultz could fill that non void easily with Dumo on the 2nd pairing |
