I heard Landeskog wants out. The 1040 said there are a few on the AVs that don't like Roy
- VANTEL

You would think they would get rid of Roy instead of their elite players.

Tanev for Barrie is a bad way to go though. Sacrificing Defense for offense when our biggest issue is preventing goals is not the answer. Tanev is better defensively than Barrie is offensively. They are about the same in the reverse, Barrie is terrible defensively.
- Retinalz

Barrie isnt terrible defensively.

You have to ask yourself, why is Colorado so anxious to move Landeskog and Barrie?
- CanuckDon

Defintely something going on. First Duchene, then Barrie and Landeskog... Can't all be about cap, but I could see some problems behind closed doors being an issue...

I've said it before in the last blog, but the Canucks need to stay relevant and at least appear to try and make the playoffs and here's why:

- The fanbase has changed since 2011 when the Canucks made their run and lost the Cup.

- The two first round sweeps and almost sweep by LA and SJ did more to damage the brand than anything due to the expectations that were put on the team.

- The lack of anything resembling a bonified prospect to show that we did have talent beyond the Sedins, Kesler, Burrows et. al made people realize that things were headed for a decline.

- The whole debacle of signing Luongo until he was 43 to get him to a reasonable caphit and subsequent CBA recapture clause then mishandling the goalie situation leading to first Schneider and then Luongo being traded made people lose faith in the organization.

- The hiring of John Tortorella and the tire fire that was his reign. The total lack of respect he had for the players by not running and even in some cases not even attending practice. Notwithstanding the incident where he went after Hartley in the Calgary dressing room.

- The changing demographics of Greater Vancouver where more people are selling out to Asian investors and higher number of immigrants pushing people who may be hockey fans (or at least people who might be more willing to be hockey fans) out further beyond the immediate suburbs of Vancouver into places like Abbotsford, Chilliwack and beyond and even to other parts of BC making going to games much less viable than before.

- The growth of the other sports teams in Vancouver (Whitecaps, Lions, Canadians) with ticket prices, parking and concessions being much more affordable and the experience more suited for the family.

What does that all lead to? Simple, hockey in Vancouver is in trouble, and it's not from a lack of support. TV ratings for the Canucks in BC get better every year, that's not the issue. It's the fact that because of the points I raised above, actually going to a game and buying tickets, merchandise, concessions and other revenue which is what in the end brings FA his profits are going down. I can tell you that he's not a very patient man, and bleeding red ink through what people consider a full rebuild will bankrupt him. There's just not enough hockey fans left in Greater Vancouver who'll actually pay or can afford to go to 41 home games a year. If you want to get people who aren't fans of hockey to be fans, you need a winner because in Vancouver there's far too much to do to go to watch a team struggle 4-5 years with youth trying to gel into a contender. In that scenario, for those wanting FA to sell, he may very well do so and keep in mind, a new owner probably isn't going to be from Vancouver or have loyalty to the city and might and I stress might move it to an area (like Seattle or Portland or Quebec City) where they could have a better chance of making money.

tl;dr Watch what you wish for, you just might get it, in a way you didn't want or expect. That's the danger we're facing now.

I'm surprised you didn't have an opinion on the current economy as well. It has become more and more expensive to live and to pay that much to go see a hockey game is ridiculous let alone the overpriced refreshments. Costs continue to rise and anyone who does have the money to go to the game doesn't want to because we aren't any good right now. I think you nailed it with the downward spiral we have been on since 2011. Gillis just completely (frank)ed us when we traded Luongo and Schneider. The new management team was changed too late I think and the business side of things suffered badly. Things aren't complete doom and gloom though but there are so many factors and you covered them well.

I could have tacked that on, but by that point, I think I had made my point. The fact is, Greater Vancouver has become a playground for the rich and Asian, and these are people that you need to win over to come watch hockey games now. The sad thing is, the actual hardcore fanbase, the real core fans who'll follow the team no matter how good or bad the team is aren't going or aren't able to go to the games.

some posters don't seem to grasp that the market won't support a long Toronto style rebuild

It's incredibly unfortunate true fans don't go to games. Being from the Island, it would cost me over 1500 dollars for a trip to a Canucks game with decent seats. I'd rather spend that on a 4k TV and watch the games at home. 4k Sportsnet coming soon!

I'm a true fan and I go to games once in a while. Vancouver fans stink, we have awful fans. Toronto has suits in the lower bowl, but regular folk up top.

To say the Asians are ruining the atmosphere is pretty funny and ignorant. Our fan base in the 90s didn't show up to games, so blaming it on the real estate market is a pretty far fetched theory. We don't have good fans when we lose, it's not rocket science.
