During the last week of May 2012, Schultz officially "de-registered" from the University of Wisconsin triggering a process that made him an unrestricted free agent (UFA). According to league rules, from the time Anaheim was given notice of the de-registration from school, they had a 30-day exclusive window to try to sign him or trade him. Anaheim was ultimately unable to sign him. Schultz was heavily recruited by up to 26 teams as a free agent, with the Edmonton Oilers having Wayne Gretzky and Paul Coffey personally recruit him. Maybe an offer sheet? It was 10-11 and his contract with the Hawks ran out in 09-10. He signed a 1 year deal for 10-11, but was still an RFA. I don't know, I'm too lazy to search any farther than generalfanager which I still had open from the Schultz thing earlier.

Plus the Buffalo news reports the Buffalo sabres charter plane landed in Boston last night. Doesn't Okposo have a news conference today at 10am. It'll be interesting to see if gmtm is at the news conference. If he is, it means the Pegula's went alone to Boston or maybe gmtm meets them there today. I see something like a Pegula meeting in the morning/afternoon and a dinner with the Pegula's , gmtm, vesey and his team and eichel tonight??

I don't understand how the chances of the Sabres signing Vesey are better than they were, say, over the weekend. He is going to meet with them today. That's it. I still think he is going to wait until August 15th, and I think the Sabres expected that when they traded for his rights. As Tim Murray said, this simply gives them an exclusive window during the recruiting process. The idea isn't so much to sign him before August 15th, though it would be nice, as it is to convince him that once he's done speaking with the teams he's interested in, he will find that Buffalo is the best place for him to play.

I would think it was also to get a better understanding of buffalo's chances. They are trying to build a team. Waiting till August 15 to figure out if you have a shot doesn't allow you to build a roster the way you may want to

Agreed. Having his rights for these couple months gets him more familiar with the organization. Way better chance of convincing him then a couple hour meet and great Aug 15th.
