I love the Canucks or did. Was a season ticket holder for almost 25 years. Bruins are my favorite team but I wanted Vancouver to win the cup regardless. Was heading to the Roxy that night to drink from the cup with my buddies that work & sing there but took in the riot instead. The entertainment district got shut down.
I even liked the hiring of Linden, Benning & Desjardins at the time but it has been an unmitigated disaster. Worst asset management I have ever seen. Having a meddlesome owner is at the route of it.
It’s unfortunate. They needed to start a proper rebuild 2 years ago & not give assets away or keep making trades trying to make the playoffs. Garrison & Bieksa if moved should have been traded at the deadline; if at all, when there values were the highest. Now we have zero to show for Hamhuis as well, another solid top 4 NHL Dman. 3 years ago the Canucks had 1 of the top 5 D’s for top 6 in the NHL. Their top 4 wasn’t as good as the really good teams but Tanev was young & our #5. Edler, Hamhuis, Bieksa, Garrison & Tanev. Solid.
Garrison was replaced with Sbisa, Bieksa with Bartowski & now Hamhuis with God knows who; I don’t like Gubranson, & Hamhuis wanted to stay. Gabranson is a hitter with a physical presence nothing else, Hamhuis is better suited to today’s faster game & still has years of service left as a top 4 as did Garrison, played as TB’s #3 last season & 4 the season prior, cup & conference appearances the last 2 years, Bieksa Anaheim’s #4 this season.
Brutal but it doesn’t just stop there.
This is not a playoff team. 1 of the worst defenses in all of hockey, scoring after the top line is virtually non existent. Good luck & good riddance. Gave up my season tickets even after the incredible enticements I was offered to keep them. Everyone I know but 1 other person has as well this summer. 3 years of dropping attendance. Curious to see how may people buy tickets & show up next season. Couldn’t give my tickets away to the 2 SJ games in March! & numerous other games last year, nor could my scalper buddy sell them. The majority of games I attended many were shown as 18K & change in paid attendance, couldn't have been more than 13K in the building if that.
I would suggest all Vancouver fans go to ESPN, highlight teams, choose Canucks, then click on transactions & few everything Benning has done since arriving. I should warn you it's not for the faint of heart. - striker777
I think we found someone who was polled, not an actual Canucks fan. |

They have started to rebuild. Every new players to the roster (with the exception of Miller and Eriksson) is under 30, most of them under 25, is that not the age of players a rebuilding team consists of? Under the previous regime, Horvat would not have made it as a teenager, nor would they have made room for him had he earned it. Benning, true to his word, clears positions for those that are earned, he did so for McCann and Hutton as well
Take a second to imagine that instead of Etem, Sbisa, and Granlund the names on the jersey were Jensen, Corrado and Shink. Same performance but Canuck draft picks instead. Would that make you feel better that they rebuilt through the draft the "proper way"? |

You're asking about us when last year your top scorer only had 5 more points than Bo, arguably at this point best suited as a 3rd line center. We'll be just fine with the Sedins signing here for another cap friendly extension to ensure they mentor the young guns up and coming. |

The Canucks didn't need to tear it down but they did need to maximize returns & not make trades to try & stay in playoff contention. Boston is in a transitional rebuild, they dressed 11 players in key roles last season that had 2 or less seasons of NHL experience when the season started. The Canucks should have followed a similiar model.
Why were Virtanen & McCann retained but barely played? Why give away McCann & a bunch of picks away for a borderline #4 Dman at best in Gubranson, that can hit & play physically but that's about it & he declined a 5 year 5 million dollar deal from Florida? 2 years to UFA status & thinks he's something he's not. Which is a slightly above average Defensive Dman that likes to pull himself out of position to hit people. We have that asset & he's over paid as well his name is Sbisa.
Is it 1970 again & I just woke up from a nice dream. This team is a mess & the prospect cupboard is virtually bare. Don't get me wrong I like Horvat, Virtanen, & Hutton, 3 good young hockey players & I assume Broeser, Demko & Julolevi will all be solid NHL players eventually but it's ugly after that.
1st off I would have selected Sergachev if I was selecting a Dman but at #5 but I wouldn't have I would have selected Tkachuk with the pick. Benning looked sick when he walked to the mike after Columbus selected Dubois. |

Prepare for the influx of white-knights rushing in to brown-nose Benning and Linden!!!
This management group deserves to be ranked last (or very close to it). - stringerbell
I look forward to you next sh!tty post in two weeks where you will continue to add zero value to the topic at hand. The Wire and Stringer Bell would be ashamed to be associated with you StringerBell |

Drafting and developing is a yearly process. It takes time whether you get the 1st or 30th pick. Won't see if Benning has been good or not for at least 2 more years. |

What versions of these two geezers were you watching? Last year Hamhuis got danced endlessly, and Garrison's heart and foot speed is also questionable at best...
STRIKE if you look at the results of the 80s in Vancouver you'd see what damage having a losing culture does to the dressing room and arena of the team. Thats a decade sub 500 hockey, and the draft picks didn't do SH*T... I applaud our team for staying relevant, it's the only way to continue a legacy of success in the west, and prevent a legacy of losing ala Toronto/Edmonton.

People seem to think that the only way to rebuild is to sell of every asset, tank and draft high and if you don't do it that way then you aren't rebuilding properly.
I've said it a hundred times: I am giving Benning the benefit of the doubt for 5 years. It takes time to draft, trade, sign FA's ext. It doesn't happen in just 1 or 2 off-seasons. If this team is still a lottery team by then I will be the first person to rip him apart. |

I should qualify my Canucks comments. With the limited # of picks Benning has retained he has drafted well although he has picked high. It's giving players away in trades for nothing but bad picks later flipped for essentially nothing & trades to acquire players over paying that is my issue.
Other than drafting; & with both 5th overall picks I select Ritchie & Tkachuk, not Virtanen & Juolevi, & signing Vrbata; then he let Desjardins devalue the asset to the point of being untradable, & Eriksson he has been brutal.
All he has done now is delay the inevitable & by the time ownership see's the light & starts over, attendance is going to plummet. Acqulnni had better hope the real estate market holds as with the Canadian dollar & current fans not filling seats even though they bought tickets they aren't buying beer, parking & food & his revenue stream is taking a serious hit.
Thankfully expansion will line his pockets with close to 30 mil US. |

How anyone can NOT think the Canucks are rebuilding, is beyond me?? They are rebuilding! And what's "the proper way"? Is there such a thing as the proper way? If there is, can someone please explain it to me.
In the past four years the Canucks have picked six times in the first round...six! Including a 5th, 6th and 9th overall. Those are excellent draft positions!
The asset management part I get, to me, it's been terrible. So is only picking ONCE in the second round in the previous four drafts. That's where Benning loses me, but I do understand trying to be competitive while the Sedins are here.
There's seven kids under the age of 25 on the team now, Gudbranson, Etem, Virtanen, Hutton, Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi and possibly Gaunce and Pedan. Are any of them stars, no, but that's a lot of youth he's brought in.
Next year if he doesn't draft in rounds 1-2-3 and acquire more picks....he's truly lost me. |

- striker777
Another useless post from an uninformed "fan". Vrbata did not want to be traded. When asked for his list, he ensured the teams on it would not want to trade him. His was was due to give birth in May and he wanted to ensure he was there. Worries about complications or something like that if i remember correctly. The only player we missed out on IMO is Larkin. Virtanen plays a game that we have not had in ages. He will score at a top 6 pace in this league. Gudbranson was a necessary piece to try to compete. Torching your team like the Leafs did has not proven anything in this league yet. Until they win a cup with this strategy, it is utter trash. |

- striker777
It is easy to criticize asset management when you are at home on your couch but in the real world it is much different.
Torts said on his exit meeting , man this core needs to be disassembled.we can sit here and say Bieksa or Garrison for a first but the real GMs are not buying that. It is even bloody harder to move a player that has a NTC that you didn't give out.
We practically were handing Higgins and Burrows away but no one wants them . Get it through your head. The best that Bieksa
and Garrison could get back is Second round picks.
I seen a lot of sensible fans on here understanding the difficulty of making trades and then there are a few like yourself still crying about the past.
If you chose to let go and cheer for another team we will get you Nuckers phone number so you can get his scouting report on which are the best teams to jump ship on. |
