The Canucks didn't need to tear it down but they did need to maximize returns & not make trades to try & stay in playoff contention. Boston is in a transitional rebuild, they dressed 11 players in key roles last season that had 2 or less seasons of NHL experience when the season started. The Canucks should have followed a similiar model.

Why were Virtanen & McCann retained but barely played? Why give away McCann & a bunch of picks away for a borderline #4 Dman at best in Gubranson, that can hit & play physically but that's about it & he declined a 5 year 5 million dollar deal from Florida? 2 years to UFA status & thinks he's something he's not. Which is a slightly above average Defensive Dman that likes to pull himself out of position to hit people. We have that asset & he's over paid as well his name is Sbisa.

Is it 1970 again & I just woke up from a nice dream. This team is a mess & the prospect cupboard is virtually bare. Don't get me wrong I like Horvat, Virtanen, & Hutton, 3 good young hockey players & I assume Broeser, Demko & Julolevi will all be solid NHL players eventually but it's ugly after that.

1st off I would have selected Sergachev if I was selecting a Dman but at #5 but I wouldn't have I would have selected Tkachuk with the pick. Benning looked sick when he walked to the mike after Columbus selected Dubois.

I agree with you and disagree with you at the same time. Benning, who I don't like as a GM personally, except his drafting, can't fix or undo ten years of bad management in two years...it's impossible.

In the past four years the Canucks have picked six times in the first round...six! Including a 5th, 6th and 9th overall. Those are excellent draft positions!

The asset management part I get, to me, it's been terrible. So is only picking ONCE in the second round in the previous four drafts. That's where Benning loses me, but I do understand trying to be competitive while the Sedins are here.

There's seven kids under the age of 25 on the team now, Gudbranson, Etem, Virtanen, Hutton, Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi and possibly Gaunce and Pedan. Are any of them stars, no, but that's a lot of youth he's brought in.

Next year if he doesn't draft in rounds 1-2-3 and acquire more picks....he's truly lost me.

In the last three years Benning has drafted Virtanen Tryamkin and MCCann who are currently in the NHL and have Demko Boeser Brisebois and Juolevi that will all be in the NHL . Seven Draft Picks in three years is a pretty significant number. You can't have a team of 23 players on your roster under the age of 22. Sometimes you need to use this picks to worry about the present.

First of all, Benning has only been at the helm for 3 drafts so what happened in 2013 probably isn't his fault Second of all, you criticize the lack of 2nd round picks and then turn around and praise him for the new young core (half of them were acquired with picks). Are you happy? sad? or really confused ? Also, your last point is a pretty definitive statement. What if he trades a 2nd for Barkov? Has he still lost you? He said at this years draft that they are done trading picks as they have done their best to fill the age gap.

His physical edge; seeing the theme here, should endear him to fans.

Even I'm not unhappy with Bennings drafting with the few picks he's retained he's drafted well but in the 1st 2 rounds with 2 top 5 selections a monkey could, the Vrbata, Eriksson or Stecher signings were great I just literally hate everything else.

I wrote that all they have to do is sign Bachman to a meaningless contract and they won't resign Miller. This way Marsktrom is protected and Bachman is the cannon fodder for Las Vegas. In 2 to 5 years lets see where the Canucks stand. With the current make up, prospects currently in the system it's going to get far more ugly before it gets better & I'm not just talking about a 3 to 5 years ugly. The rebuild to date has been handled well. Assets expended should have garnered better returns. They didn't & there is no way to make up for that now.

Nor do I have any faith in the current management team to achieve it. We should be adding picks not spending them. We're not adding enough prospects fast enough.

It takes almost 3 years for most prospects to get to the NHL if not selected in the top 10 another 5 to show there true colors. Horvat was selected 9th, was sent back to JR for 1 year & now has 2 years of NHL experince under his belt, his break is still over a year away. 20 to 25 golas & 50 to 55 points for Horvat next season. Potentially more if he had someone other than Baertschi & Virtanen to play with.

It's always good to ask Vantel , nothing can go wrong with that Logic

I know this is a joke but it made me think of something just now. Is a guy like Brent Burns eligible to be counted as a forward or Dman during expansion? If so, that'd be an unfair advantage.
