But I thought only Benning made mistakes as a GM?

the only GM that's mistake free is James Tanner. |

Every GM makes mistakes. You can really only judge a GM after they have had 4 or 5 yrs to mold their vision of a team, to be fair. I like to rag on Benning and Chia but its like blaming a PM or President in their first term for lingering messes from prior administrations. Critiquing specific transactions, however, should be fair game. - FLflames34
GM's really need five years to be judged properly on their construction of a team. Doesn't mean they can't be ragged on for stupid poop along the way though. |

How anyone can NOT think the Canucks are rebuilding, is beyond me?? They are rebuilding! And what's "the proper way"? Is there such a thing as the proper way? If there is, can someone please explain it to me.
In the past four years the Canucks have picked six times in the first round...six! Including a 5th, 6th and 9th overall. Those are excellent draft positions!
The asset management part I get, to me, it's been terrible. So is only picking ONCE in the second round in the previous four drafts. That's where Benning loses me, but I do understand trying to be competitive while the Sedins are here.
There's seven kids under the age of 25 on the team now, Gudbranson, Etem, Virtanen, Hutton, Horvat, Granlund, Baertschi and possibly Gaunce and Pedan. Are any of them stars, no, but that's a lot of youth he's brought in.
Next year if he doesn't draft in rounds 1-2-3 and acquire more picks....he's truly lost me. - LeftCoaster
You shouldn't worry about it at all - in the last 4 years out of the 120+ players that have been chosen in the 2nd round - about 10 have played more than 10 games - like the band said "it makes no difference" |

Sometimes I feel like fans value mid round picks more than actual contributing NHL players |

Well I do like second rounders and the more you pick the better your chances are of finding a great player, also, you can't use the last two years, kids are still too young. |

What assets should they use to fill the 20-24 age gap? Our vets aren't worth anything. Better 2nds than 1sts |

Yup I agree, I know why he was doing it. I just think when Benning got here he thought the team was better than it actually was. Thus he used a few more picks in trades than I'd have liked.
Look I bust Bennings balls on certain things but I also praise him for other things, his drafting in particular. Do I think he's a horrible GM, no, nor do I think he's one of the better GM's. For a relatively new General Manager his learning curve has been steep, but IMO he is learning.
I've said this many times, if he's given enough time, he'll draft a winner in Vancouver. |

It could have been worse, two 1sts and a 2nd for Kessel. |

I didn't include them into my first comment bcus there's only been one in the last 2 years and he's played 18 games - Daniel Sprong....
Chris Tierney is the only players of any relevance in the past 4 years - and thats a stretch
from the 2011 class there are some beauties - Rask, Saad, Jenner, Nieto, Kucherov
so thats 6 out of 150 making an actual impact
My point is - a lot of the posters on here getting pretty bent out of shape about 2nd round picks and in reality the % of them actually becoming anything significant is very very low |

I think it's somewhere around 30%, which is not "very very low" but, as mentioned, he had a lot of work to do when he got here.
To me drafting is his thing, I just wish he'd do it more. But I understand we can't have it both ways. |

True, but with Bennings skills, i'd bet he can find a Saad/Jenner in the 2nd |

If he ever makes another 2nd round pick.
His only 2nd was Demko I think. |

Yup....and what a beauty pick it was. Picking up Baertschi looks to be a good gamble as well. |
