Yeah but the Rangers, outside of Mcdonagh never give any RFA that type of deal. Not even Lundqvist. Now hindsight is 20/20. People don't want Kreider on the team now. 2 years he would have been in a position to sign a longer term RFA deal. Conversely, the Rangers shot themselves in the foot by not treating Stepan as equal to Mcdonagh.

I really think this is the key. In two years, this team will have the flexibility to make the moves we all wanted them to make this year. Until then, I think they should just weather the storm and hope for the best if it truly is a gridlock on the trade front.

Sorry but the kid has not earned a 6 year facking extension after his miserable end to the season. Especially because he didn't do jack poop the first 2 years of his ELC.

I have no problem with this sort of deal. Honestly, I wish there were a way to sign everybody to this sort of term. Obviously, I see why the players wouldn't do it, but it makes a lot of sense in some ways. Guys sign a long term deal and at the end of it, if they have "surpassed their value", they end up looking for ridiculous money for long enough that you are paying them for multiple years of declining play, or they feel they aren't properly appreciated and walk. If Miller has two more good years, then he will be well worth signing to another, higher contract.

But basically they may have put themselves back in cap constraints, because if Miller plays well, like I think he will, he will cost way more then than now. I would rather take flier at $4 mil now, knowing he could be exposed in expansion draft if he regressed substantially, rather than paying way more down the road if he pans out. It could be $5 mil+ in future, meaning cap space will have been eaten up by being shortsighted.
