If I were him I'd want to cash in long term 6/7 years, then cash in again later when I'm still relatively in my prime. - chilliard77
Idk, just spit balling here and being generous with AAV for initial long term deal life, say he's got 14 years left to play.
Bridge: 2 years at 4.5 per + 7 years at 8 per + 5 years at 5.5 per = 92.5
Long term: 6 years at 5 + 7 at 8 + 1 at 4 = 90
I think the move for a player is get to UFA asap |

The trouble with this is that Risto is pretty terrible defensively (hoping he can fix that part of his game). Not to mention that Karlsson doubled his point total this year, or that Karlsson is top 3 defensemen in the league. - chilliard77
The thing is...
I think Karlsson is EXTREMELY overrated
The guy is a scoring machine, no doubt
But teams are successful in the playoffs with defensemen like Doughty, Keith & Seabrook, McDonaugh, Hedman, etc
Risto looks to be A LOT more like those guys than Karlsson does
If I was up by a goal with 2 min left,
I'd be sitting Karlsson in the bench |

I disagree with just about everything you just said lol. If Ottawa's owner wasn't such a cheapskate Karlsson would have more playoff success. |

I think you might be a little crazy on this one ..2 time Noris trophy defenseman
I'm guessing he will probably reach about five when his career is over with
You're basically taking someone who has potential to be great over someone that already is - GERBE!!!75PTS
I think the only thing the Norris tells you,
Is who the best Offensive defenseman is
I'd prefer my defensemen actually be good at defense
Ottawa will never have a deep playoff run with Karlsson
Unless they can find a few other shut down defensemen to play important minutes |

Except Risto is really not very good at Defense, and Karlsson is massively underrated defensively.
http://public.tableau.com...ST2SMX?:display_count=yes
His CF% was 15th ranked and his CF60 was 16th ranked. And his relative numbers are great, but I think that was more due to the fact that the Sens don't have very good defensemen. He's 3rd in relative CF60 and 2nd in relative CF%.
Edit: Also to your point about "Important minutes" Karlsson had the most ice time in the league, full stop. |

Ottawa was 28th in goals against in the league, with Karlsson playing all those minutes
We were 16th with Risto leading the way in icetime
Stats can be deceiving
I do think they're useful, but if u just watch the players, Risto is better in his own end than Karlsson

Let's say for the sake of argument that's true. Karlsson had twice the points of Risto. That more than makes up for any "deficiencies" in his defensive game.
Risto allowed the second most unblocked shots in the league. Karlsson was 4th. That's a raw total, not per 60 so, of course they're going to be high, because Risto was 5th in ice time and Karlsson was 1st. So really Karlsson is better, if marginally in that regard, and you can't score if you don't get shots through. Risto's 46th FA/60(unblocked shots) is that of such defensive stalwarts as Mark Fayne, Luke Schenn, Ben Lovejoy and Jack Johnson. Karlsson isn't even in the "top 100" in that category.
The "Karlsson's bad at defense" is a horse that has been dead for a while now, but yet keeps being beaten. |

I'm just telling u what I see with my eyes
I think all these "analytics" are only moderately accurate
There's 5 players on the ice for each team at a time
When u take these stats & apply them equally to all 5 guys on the ice, it's partially deceiving
Just like +\- in a way
If a goalie let's in a bad shot, how is it everyone else's fault?
Stats only tell part of the story is all I'm saying
The rest, u have to actually watch
IMO anyways

Fine, just eliminate all the stats I used. Karlsson had twice the points that Risto had. That more than makes up for any perceived deficiencies.
I saw Risto get beat so many times last year, so many times. And I highly doubt you're sitting down and watching Sens games in your spare time. So you got 4 or 5 times to see Karlsson play us and maybe a few more times if you watched HNIC. Risto will be a good 2 guy. Karlsson is the best defenseman in the league. Who's Pittsburgh's big shutdown guy? Letang? He's just Karlsson-lite.
Edit: None of the stats I mentioned had anything to do with goals allowed. Or were you just referencing +/-? |

I was just showing how any stat can be misleading in a way
But as far as Risto vs Karlsson
Obviously Karlsson is better right now
My point, which I wasn't doing a good enough job making...
Is that at this stage Karlsson isn't good enough in his own end to actually be that guy who can play 30min & lead his team to a Cup. And I don't think he ever will.
(I do think Letang is better defensively btw)
You make a good point though. I do only see Karlsson play 5-6 times a year, mostly against us. So it is possible I'm not giving him enough credit defensively. But from what I've seen, he's just not Doughty, or Keith, or even Seabrook in his own end.
Back to why I'd take Risto over him
Since I don't think Karlsson can ever be the guy defensively...
That kind of just eliminates him as a guy I'd ever want,
Even though he is as dynamic an offensive defenseman as we've seen in the NHL in quite some time. Maybe since Paul Coffey.
Risto does have a chance to turn into a Keith, McDonaugh, etc type player though. And a good chance IMO
That's why I'd take him.
Not bc he's better now though.
Obviously that's just not true

Did anyone watch Risto in the last 40 games? He was not only not great he was downright awful at times. Overall, the last half of the season he was below average. Not sure if he wore down or what, but the risto of the last 40+ games was not the risto of the first 40+

But Karlsson is already better than Keith or McDonagh.
If Risto was great defensively I could see your point, but Karlsson has been elite over a period of time. Risto isn't even elite in any way yet |

Of course, but you don't think it's also possible Karlsson scores even more playing with Kane and Toews as opposed to Kyle Turris and Stone? |

Which is fine, if there was a minute to go in a game, and we were up by 1, I'd rather have Keith.
But do you think Risto is even close to Keith yet?
I love Risto, but I severely doubt he will ever be on Karlsson's level. |
