I mentioned the Ducks and Devils called about Girgensons and all of a sudden the Finnish guy says it.

Foligno got $1.875 per after his EL expired.
- dadeadhead

Something in that range seems about right for Girgs IMO

I wonder what the holdup with getting Risto signed?
There's been a handful of compatibles that have been signed making between 5-6mil per season...
Split the difference & call it a day

Any word on Risto signing?
I feel like something around 5.5per should be pretty easy to work out...
I guess I'm wondering if there's a hold up for some reason?

That's not a completely fair comparison though. Foligno also brings his size and willingness to drop the gloves. Not that Girgs isnt gritty, but the definitely isn't quite on par with Foligno when it comes to fighting.

So assuming their stats are similar, Foligno is going to make more, and rightfully so.

I hear ya, to an extent...there were plenty of times over the last few seasons where he didn't even come close to living up to that billing...he was really soft and he wasn't scoring...his and Larsson's saving grace this year was forming a line with Gionta

There's no reason what so ever Girgensons shouldn't be better than Cal.
- TheSabresTaco

he is...small sample size featuring a 29 yr. old career ahl'er who happened to string together some pretty decent games late in the year in a bottom-six role when the team was pretty much out of a playoff spot

And Girgs needs to learn from that.

Cal O'Reilly is an ok fringe NHLer
Girgensons is a 22 year old who's already had some nice success, coming off a poor scoring season
I've always thought we should use him as trade bait bc he's never been a "scorer" at any level, and to expect him to be a consistent 20+ goals a season guy just doesn't seem likely
But he's a solid top9 guy
Good 3rd liner
Or if we decide to split talent up onto 3 lines, he can slot in at either wing on any of those lines
If we move him for something good, that's great
If not, I like him enough knowing he'll prob max out as a good 3rd line center that can play against other teams top lines & score around 15goals per

Girgensons contract should have been easy. I think he's a goner.

Girgs role on this team has taken a major hit with the additions we've made over the past 2 seasons. We've added Reinhart, Eichel, ROR, now Okposo and Nylander. That is a clear indication of how Murray feels about a guy he didn't draft. Hes not a top 6 player on my team.

Girgs was forced into a top 6 role a few years ago due to lack of talent. He was able to excel because there was no immediate threat to his standing on the team. He could focus on playing hockey. He struggled a lot defensively as a center, and that's where the beginning of his stock took a dive. Is he talented enough to play a top 6 role? I believe so. He fit in well with Eichel early in the season, but Bylsma was too stubborn to stick with Kane-Eichel as a pairing that he wasn't given a chance to prove it. But hes not going to be askrd to be a permanent fixture of our teams top 6 going into the future. If he wants to stay here, he needs to embrace being a role player, an important one at that. One that could and should get top 6 minutes when things aren't going well or injury.

I think the hang up surrounding Girgs is that hes being under valued to his own self value. He believes he should be a top 6 player and wants the financial security of being paid like one either mid or long term. He doesn't see the benefit of taking a short term bridge "prove it" contract because he understands with the players Buffalo has that he really wont be given a chance to prove it

I think the narrative that he had a down year, refuses to play the coaches system, or isn't a top 6 player is too critical. Girgs is a player you need on a playoff team, we need him to embrace being a role player.

He is not a top 6 player on any playoff team IMO.

He should stick to what got him drafted in the first round.

Work his a$$ off, win battles, and never stop moving

Last season no... But I do think he can be in some ways.

I have a hard time imagining he can't develop into a pretty nice player.

He lacks the scoring touch to be a top 6 forward on a good team IMO. He's never had the scoring touch it's just not going to show up
