Im starting to feel like Schenn is getting as much, and similar, criticism as Carter got back in the day. 'Schenn/Carter can score goals but nothing else'. At the same time a lot of people were really critical of the front office that they didn't draft a sniper/goal-scorer, but a bunch of 'two-way Flyeresque grinders' instead. Unless you draft top 5-10 or get very lucky, it's really hard to get a do-it-all player. And believing the the team can just go out and get a young top6 stud instead is more of wishful thinking than reality nowadays.
A team needs players that has a nose for the goal, even though they don't always drive possession all day long. At least Schenn is also physical and doesn't shy away from going to the tough areas from time to time. It will suck that the team will probably have to trade away some of our young prospects (or older core players) in the future due to the cap but that will happen to all teams that are successful (which Im sure the Flyers will be). - PhillySteen
The trouble is, Jeff Carter wasn't a one dimensional player and he was a consistent 30-40 goal scorer when he was in his prime years as a Flyer. He was used in all situations and even had seasons where he was used in a shutdown role.
It's not as simple as driving possession, Schenn has been a mediocre two way player at the NHL level. He's not reliable defensively, he's not a good faceoff guy, he's been little used on the PK due to these shortcomings-not because they are saving him for the PP.
Schenn is a good, solid productive player. He wouldn't be easy to replace. But it wouldn't be impossible, either. If he goes to the dirty areas and battles like he did from January on last season, he'd be very hard to replace. That's the key. That's why people are hesitant about his contract situation or willing to move him.

I believe the kreider deal is very comparable to schenn. Player gets more guaranteed cash then going through arbitration. Team gets cost certainty and should be able to move that contract in the future if needed. I would be shocked if they make it to arbitration. |

The comps Schenn are between $5-5.5 mln. I figure this gets done 4 years $21-22 mln. Hextall hates losing ascending assets. - wbtravis

Can you imagine the evisceration he's going to get if he doesn't perform?

Pretty much anyone who doesn't perform gets eviscerated. Look at Voracek, and his performance wasn't even bad.
After seeing the numbers I'm a lot more happy about the Schenn situation. Either they bang out a deal for an acceptable term or he's on a one year contract at $5.5mm to prove it was the real deal. If he does that, I'm more comfortable paying him the cash and term. |

True.
Agreed, we all know he's not getting anything over 5.5 max and if that's the case it's very short term and we still have the option of "selling high". Though his value will take a hit on the trade market as other teams will know that we either...
A) Are forced to sign him to a huge contract at the end of next year or year after
B) Lose him for nothing in FA
C) Trade him before the season starts to avoid any potential slump that could further lower his value |
|
|
|
Except the criticism would be just. Want to get paid well, then play well. If he gets paid over 5mil and has a 12 goal season, yeah let the boo birds rain down on him. |

There's always a risk that he could slump or have his value dip in a trade, but if he plays well enough, he gets paid.
I do think there's enough room to get a deal hammered out. Neither side was ridiculous in their demands-look at Holland and the Leafs, they went $900K and he demanded $2.1mm. Schenn didn't make an outrageous demand like $6mm or something |

His season was revenge from the hockey gods for letting him shoot 17% during the lockout shortened season |

I look at Holland's demands and see an agent telling him to go balls to the wall in hopes of a 1 year 1m deal. He just did not fit Babcock's system at all and has not proven much at all since being drafted 15th overall. |

True. But in Schenn's case he's not being unreasonable, which probably indicates he's willing to get a deal done. Even with a one or two year arbitration award, they have time to hammer out a contract. |

Luke signs for 1.25 per. Not sure if I lost the bet to mjl. Don't know if I said he's gonna sign for half his last cap hit or under 1 mil a year |

Congrats. This is an historic moment in Hockeybuzz history. First time since joining in 2008, that you called something correctly. Odds are it would happen eventually.

within $1.2mm...Flyers submitted 2 years, 1st at $4.25mm, 2nd at $4.369mm, Schenn submitted for $5.5mm for one year |
