Bill just wrote a blog about that, a few days ago. Might want to read it. How can a GM be expected to sign a player to a league minimum deal, when the player has UFA leverage, and would never sign it? Lacks common sense. - MJL
Ahh.... don't sign it? |

Just because a player's market value is X doesn't mean you have to sign that player. He is bad, and at best is a depth D-man at best. Depth D-men don't deserve $1M, let alone $5M over 6 years |

He's better than a depth defenseman. He's been a top 4 minute defenseman the majority of his career. Choosing not to sign a player is quite different than " Holmgren should've signed him to the league minimum". Still waiting for a valid example of a player that fits what you stated. |

I never said he should have signed him to league minimum. That's putting words in my mouth.
Getting minutes doesn't translate to ability. I could be rolled out for the most minutes in the NHL, but that doesn't mean I do well in those minutes. MacDonald played a lot of minutes, yes. Put he played them very poorly. |

There weren't any words put in your mouth. You responded to my question of "what specific player did Holmgren sign to a really big deal, that should've been making league minimum" ? With and I quote
"Andrew MacDonald. Not based on his market value, of course, but because of his skills. "
I don't really want to get into a debate about MacDonald, that wasn't really what I was asking about. I was just looking for an example of a player that Holmgren signed to a really big deal that should've been signed for league minimum. I guess looking at the situation and the reality of the market, doesn't come into play.

Yes. Andrew MacDonald should be making league minimum (or thereabouts) based on his skill. I did not say they should have signed him to league minimum, as that would have been impossible. I know that his market value was roughly what the Flyers gave him. But that's not what his actual value was. |

You're welcome, plebeian.
However, I offer you the Scripture: "For I am not God," spake GiG. "God is in all of us; alas, He I am not. God is Giroux. He is God. Giroux_Is_God."

I would think they'd be looking at Simmonds or our D prospects. I don't think they'll want to center a deal around Schenn tbh. |

Other than your opinion, what is the basis for stating what his actual value is? How can you quantify that? How is a players actual value, and his market value different? Your all over the map here. There is no reasonable basis for stating that MacDonald should be making the league minimum. Your entire premise is simply based on not liking the player, in my opinion. I think a reasonable case can be made that he is overpaid, which I would agree with, but not to the point where he should be making league minimum.
You answered Andrew MacDonald to a direct question of which player did Holmgren sign to a "really big deal" that he should've signed to the league minimum. |

That's the market...I'm still Luke warm on the guy....some nights he's fantastic...others you don't know if he's played...if Flyers aren't sold on him yet they may never be...I'm sure it wouldn't ge that hard to move him. I guess we will see today. - landros 2
It's not really the market, a better player(Jaden Schwartz) got $5.35mm. I wouldn't be happy paying Schenn that much over a long term unless he was more proven. |

I think when looking at comparables, Schenn's market is around 5M. I think that is a fair deal.

Other than my opinion? Well that's kind of hard to do, because we don't really have an all encompassing stat like baseball does which would really take opinion mostly out of it. But based on the statistics we do have, MacDonald has been a replacement level player his whole career. And, in reality, is likely far below replacement level.
I don't dislike Andrew MacDonald by any means. I've met him on many occasions and is a great guy. He is simply an ineffective D-man.
"How is a players actual value, and his market value different? Your all over the map here" - MJL
Lol. I'm really not. The market value is the value that a good can be sold on a given market. In this case, the good is his services as a hockey player, and the market is the UFA market. His actual value is what value over a replacement level player he provides. These are common definitions.
For example, I think a full season of Sean Couturier has an actual value that is extraordinarily high. But at the same time, he recieved what I think was market value, as the market was the RFA market

That's not a fair comparison. Schwartz's deal bought just one year of UFA eligibility. Schenn's would be three. |
